Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Mystics and Magicians on Sat 04 Aug 2007 at 2.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets

Match report by Ed Keedwell

A glorious day and idyllic setting greeted those who had made the journey to Dunsford to play the Mystics and Magicians. Given the weather in the preceeding weeks some were asking whether the Magicians had indeed cast a spell or two to keep the rain at bay.

The Erratics's captain, Peter Thomson, won the toss and elected to bat. Good bowling from the opening Mystics bowlers and some excellent defensive play from McRae and Davies ensured that the Erratics enjoyed a solid start to their innings before Davies was caught at the wicket after gloving a lifter.

Matt Turner strode in at Number 3 and increased the pace of the innings right from the start with some well struck boundaries in the first few balls he faced. The partnership was broken after McRae turned one off his legs seemingly for four, but alas he was caught down the leg side. Jonathan Kirby was next in and immediately showed his aggressive intent with a couple of plays and misses and some well timed boundaries.

When Kirby Snr fell, Kirby Jnr was next in and unfortunately due to some dubious and conflicting advice from some of the more experienced members of the team was bowled without scoring. Orpen came in at number 6 and made useful runs but before long Keedwell joined Turner at the crease and the pair nudged the odd one and two before Turner was out and Price came to the crease.

Keedwell then decided to hit out and only succeeded in finding midwicket with a top-edged pull. Pearson and Price saw out the remaining overs in responsible fashion and the Erratics posted 126. The received wisdom was that this was about 25 too few....or was it?

Tea - a fine spread was provided, but how close were we to Tea disaster? The tea urn needed to be lit and the matches were well past their sell by date. Having procured a lighter, the urn could still not be lit, until the man who knew about these things was summoned. His name? Ernie. Seriously - you wouldn't make it up. Also during Tea, a certain Mr Turner apparently broke with Erratics etiquette by eating tea with his shirt off. His protestations that this was to reduce the possibility of getting quiche on his whites fell on deaf ears.

McRae opened the bowling as well as the batting and immediately put pressure on the Mystics opening batsmen with a tight line. Pearson opened the bowling at the other end and strove to make the breakthrough. It was McRae who got the first wicket courtesy of a stunning catch by Davies at first slip - none appeared more stunned than the man himself as he looked disbelievingly at the ball in his hand. First change and Keedwell came on to bowl and lived up to the Erratic name with some 'varied' lines and lengths. In the meantime, an excellent piece of fielding by Kirby Snr at cover point had run out one of the opposition's best batsmen ("Sid" Thomson). "That was sensational" commented Sid as he walked off.

Keedwell then got the third wicket with a swealing delivery (yes, swealing - see Royal Oak, Dunsford bar staff for a definition) to make it 60-odd for 3. Orpen and Price then came on to bowl with no luck and the score ticked over to over 100. The final bowling change was for Davies and Turner to come on and perhaps turn the match... Davies bowled well and in his third over got the breakthrough which brought young Fraser (8 years approx) to the crease. Davies, showing no mercy peppered the boy with bouncers and beamers and eventually bowled him with a yorker. The ensuing Flintoff-style shirt-off celebration was unseemly to say the least*.

The Mystics managed to see off the hat-trick ball and Turner came on to bowl at the other end. Despite having professed at Tea to hating everything about being in the field, Turner lived up to his name and bamboozled the batsman with spin and got a wicket with his very first ball and also 2 in his first over.
However, despite the efforts of all the bowlers, the Mystics finished worthy winners on 127-7.

In the evening the merits of Wii Tennis, Boxing and Bowling were discussed over a pint of Dartmoor's finest. Some Erratics were more confused about the discussions of these games than others, I don't think anyone wants to contemplate what the unintiatied thought Wii Tennis was. Modern technology also proved to be a struggle for Peter who asked if anyone had a 'landline' on their mobile phone although everyone knew what he meant, as a signal is pretty hard to come by in Dunsford. Later on in the evening the Mystics handed out the fines and most of the Erratics went relatively unscathed, although McRae will probably disagree as he lost out to the tune of 60p (arguing with the Umpire about his guard???) for 3 separate fines!
