Match report Match report by Fraser Chave - on the occasion of his 100th game for the Erratics.

I just happened to look at the website before the game to discover that, thanks to the updates of past games, I had reached my 100th game for the Erratics. It is of further interest to note that two other players in the team had also reached their 100th game at previous games in the season (Martin Wright and Jeff Haynes). So heres a quick update of the match totals for each player after the game against Marldon:

Jonathan Kirby: 325
Martin Wright: 105
Fraser Chave: 100
Duncan Chave: 108
Phil Power: 84
Gajendra Singh: 4
Mark Philips: 90
Ben Youngman: 57
Danny Williamson: 45
Rob Scott: 6
Jeff Haynes: 105

It was a 1:00 start at Maldon, discovered thankfully just in time by certain members of our team. The sun was not shining and we were reassured that it would continue to not shine throughout the day. We lost the toss and we were invited to bat first, so we sat around for 5 minutes waiting for the opening batsmen to arrive, when they did arrive they were quickly dressed and Martin and Jonathan were quickly sent out with instructions to continue the fine batting display that they had achieved the previous day. They started well, keeping up a good early run rate whilst still looking steady and confident until the 8th over when there was a slight miscommunication and both batsmen batsmen ended up at the same end. In an attempt to keep the bowling team confused with a left right hand batting combination, I took Jonathan's place at the crease and thankfully myself and Martin continued, a slightly slower, pace of safe batting. We made it to the half way point with both our wickets intact. Martin began to increase the run rate after the drinks including one mightly struck straight six, he also mightly struck a ball a couple of overs later but this one however was aimed straight for a Maldon fielder who attempted to drop it but ended up smothering it. Having been deprived of captaincy last week by the rain, Duncan had been given another chance this week and it was he who took to the crease now. It was clear early on that the stress of captaincy would not affect his batting as he continued to rack up the total runs in season score into the high 300s. The total continued to rise past 100 and after I was dismissed bowled around my legs, Phil took my place and we made it past 150 with the last ball of the innings being struck firmly for 4 taking our total beyond the 160 mark and our Captains score beyond the 50 mark. As we ate tea, we got the political discussions out of the way, before preparing ourselves for the task of defending 162in 40 overs. Act 2 was about to begin.

Dreamy Ben Youngman and Creamy Danny Williamson opened the bowling and while they did so with some skill the opening batsmen did not take any prisoners and each slightly misjudged delivery was struck firmly to the boundary. This did not last however, as Ben and Danny discovered the batsmen's personally weaknesses and began to bowl in a way to exploit them, the run rate was sufficiently trimmed. Ben and Danny both finished their spells of 8 overs and Rob and Phil began theirs. At drinks they had not lost any wickets but as Ben said, since they were on 72 and we'd bowled half our overs they'd only make 144 and we would win so there was no point in continuing playing anymore. On that note we continued playing. It was left to Rob to begin the wicket taking, as he began bowling around the wicket to the left hander he managed to get one to follow down the hill, scraping the edge and ending up in the hands of Captain resident slip fielder. Maldon player John then came to the crease and as he was walking in we gave Rob the simple advice that he should "get him out early" and "bowl him one that doesn't bounce." So he did. The game was far from over though, and as their remaining opener struck Phil back over his head for six we realised we still had a lot to do. As Martin marked the ground where the ball had been lost by finding a different kind of ball of his own, the message he was sending was simple. Some extra quality bowling from Rob saw another wicket being taken and ending him on the majestic figures of 8 - 3 - 9 - 3. There was some grand one handed stoppage from Mark Phillips, some fine knee work from Gajendra and Danny fielded very well in the boggy down slope and ended up looking like he'd been dragged through a hedge on several occasions. There was even an exceeding rare event of Ben diving for the ball, and while he dived over it and the ball went to the boundary his intentions were clear and that was all that matters. Myself and Jeff were left to bowl the last 8 overs and between us we bowled the equivalent of a cunning plan as Jeff bowled outside the off stump to save the economy, whoops I mean in an economy saving way, and I bowled to at the stumps in an attempt to increase the wicket counter. This proved to be successful as the required run rate increased and their available pool of batsmen decreased it proved to be too much of a total for Maldon and the game was over. All in all it was a grand game played in a suitably friendly manner and with very little to separate the two teams and as we sat in the pub garden to discuss the game and future plans there was still one question that puzzled Gajendra "Is Scooby a boy or a girl?"
