Erratics Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Another Climax at Clyst. A Ben Youngman report.

Let’s start at the half-way point with a summary of Erratics’ fielding performance. And jolly good it was. Catches all over the field. Welcome on this occasion. Such exploits allowed Dan Thistlethwaite to conceive the `catch of the day’ award, which, of course, came with customary fishing-related puns. Matt Cook’s take at long on from Ben Abrahams, while narrowly avoiding breaching the boundary, and Charlie Phillips’ take at mid-off from Chris Ferro, sparked the award. Dan himself, however, receives two nominations, both for reaction catches: one at point from Ben Youngman, and one at gulley from Rob Scott. And with two nominations, Dan takes the physically non-existant award home.

A stellar Erratic performance in the field was met with aggressive batting in almost equal measure by Clyst. Wickets to Fraser Chave, Mark Phillips and Charlie helped keep this in check, though. Clyst’s final total of 191, however, didn’t daunt captaining Matt. It definitely didn’t daunt any of those that remember The Great Chase of 2014, when victory required that we pass Clyst’s 250 total.

The chase would, however, need batting fuel. Highlights included blue (I think it was blue; do amend if I’m mistaken) velvet cake, and unambiguous carrot cake.

Fraser and Charlie opened to start what could be `The Even Greater Chase of 2016’. Clearly this would require extra drama to counteract the 60 run gap. Just before Fraser took to the crease, Annie, off to fetch Duncan, issued the order: “don’t get out until I’m back”. He duly obliged. In that time Charlie missed a late inswinger that went through to his off stump and Matt Cook walked after a subtle nick. Then Annie and Duncan returned to see Fraser, now batting with Chris, direct one to point; unfortunately they missed a delightful pair of leg glances on way to 21.

Fraser’s departure saw our keeper Ian `Hoops’ Hooper arrive at the crease, form a stable partnership with Chris and maintain the brisk run rate needed. Ian’s downfall made way for Gajendra, who succumed leg before to a full toss. Then, when a 6- or 7-an-over rate was still needed, Chris was aptly partnered by the always quick-between-the-wickets Ben A. Chris and he soon added 42 to the score, before Ben’s wicket fell. Targeting the necessary rate, next batsmen Mark and Dan necessarily adopted Twenty20 mode, which resulted in their wickets being short-lived. As Ben Y came in with just over two overs remaining, Chris calmly calculated scenarios of how and where to score the necessary runs and made one come to fruition, soon securing the win with a characteristically classy square cut through the off side, and with two balls to spare.

Although this meant the match was a nail-biter and reached quite a climax, my report has yet to reach its…

Chris left the field to applause from both sides, having not only created a visual delight for onlookers, a highlight of which was perhaps back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket, but also, with 132, having posted his highest ever score for the Erratics, which took his career batting average over the 70 mark.

Perhaps just shy of The Great Chase of 2014 in terms of numbers and drama, but definitely another classic at Clyst.
