Match report Erratics v Bridford Sunday 4th June 2017

Woke up Sunday morning to discover there had been another terrorist attack, this time in London.
Usually on a day when I'm playing cricket the first thing I do is check the weather and hope the game is going ahead. Today the first thing I did was check my son and other relatives and friends were okay. Thank goodness they all were.
The skipper for the game, Jeff picked me up and we started making our way to Bridford. After discussing this latest atrocity we managed to gradually start focusing on the game ahead. As the roads became narrower and we continued driving down green country lanes, the cruel, unfair, outrageous and horrendous world gradually receded and the safe and absorbing bubble of playing cricket in Devon began to take over.
As we made our way from our car through the wild meadow grass towards the Bridford ground and pavilion (yes pavilion!), the old plastic sheeted lean to has been replaced, the rain started ( see photos). It was heavier than forecast but a positive outlook from our hosts and our skipper Jeff promised a shortened game of 30 overs with 6 of them for each bowler.
Our opening bowler Ben arrived sporting a very stylish umbrella, which Fraser (see photo) immediately joined him under with poor Nick desperately trying to also use for shelter. "Come on!"
bellowed the skipper - "time to get changed we're starting in 5 minutes!" "We're fielding because I lost the toss."The rain eased off for a while and with Penny Price sportingly volunteering to keep wicket we took to the field, with threatening grey clouds not far away.
Dillon and Hole opened for Bridford and looked a bit dangerous to me. But not to Youngman and Power. A creative choice of opening bowlers from Jeff offering very different deliveries to prevent the batsmen settling in. Ben was as mean as ever, conceding only 8 runs with 1 maiden for his 8 overs. But it was Phil who bamboozled Dillon and got the first wicket.
Jeff was really looking after his bowlers as only a fellow bowler can. Running towards them to return the ball as gently as possible after carefully drying it with a towel.
It certainly paid off as Phil bowled a double wicket maiden with his 6th and final over finishing with 3 for 23 off 6 overs. He then chose a perfect moment to bring on Nick. Hole had just hit an almighty six off Phil's 5th over but followed by 5 dot balls. Nick went through his calming down and focussing routine which involves a brief halt, a lift of the shoulders with a deep inhalation followed by a long exhalation (on exactly the same note/pitch) then launched a perfectly pitched delivery which bowled Hole with his first ball!
Nick continued like this for 3 overs and ended his spell with 3 for 12.
This all sounds too good to be true but don't worry we were dropping catches by the half dozen all afternoon. Except for Penny who took a superb catch behind off Jeff. All of the bowlers performed well; last but not least Fraser, who finished with amazing figures of 2 for 5 off 5 overs with 2 maidens. His fielding was also good and as entertaining as always. But Chris Ferro helped the most in the field with keeping their score down, swooping and throwing as only he can. However it was Nick who took the top entertainment medal (and a strong contender for something at the awards) for a diving attempt at preventing a boundary. This ended with him surfing on his backside gathering mud and momentum, not preventing 4 but stopping just short of the pavilion steps just in time for tea. Even with this boundary their score gave us a very attainable target of 70.
Bridford provided a satisfying tea with several sandwich options for the veggies in the team as well as mini pasties, sausage rolls and their usual jam doughnuts to try and slow down our batting.
Danny and Peter Colclough opened with the former playing a beautiful drive to the boundary continuing his excellent batting this season. However he only managed to score one more run before being bowled by Buckley's 4th ball. He did well to play at all considering his shoulder injury.
During Peter's first game of the year he showed several of his trademark late glances and contributed well to a terrific partnership with Ben Youngman. Ben came out at 3 and played the best innings of his Erratics' career so far with the game's top score of 32.Including six 4's with some beautiful straight drives.
Like the rain showers, Dan and Penny's innings were brief. But first Nick and then Phil kept Ben company until he was bowled attempting to crank up the score. He so nearly hit the winning runs which would have been well deserved after such a brilliant innings in difficult damp conditions. They saw out the game with Phil striking the ball well and deserving more than his 2 winning runs due to an increasingly wet outfield. So we finished with six wickets in hand, and pints in the pub.
