After 2017’s draw, 2018 was clearly time for the either_or("Erratics", "Mystics"} to re[either_or("t", "g")]ain the President's Cup. Toss-winners Mystics sent Erratics out to bat in an attempt to boost their chances of regaining the cup. But the Erratics' openers Andrew Forrester and Matt Crawford were less than compliant, accumulating 23 and 27, respectively, the latter a well-deserved highest ever, at the time. And once Andrew’s and Danny Williamson's wickets had fallen in similar time, Erratics were 83 for 3, which made us feel fairly either_or("confident", "confident").

Duncan's recollection of his destructive bowling spell, which I received in December, was perhaps more impressive than the spell itself. I shall capture it verbatim; have no doubts about the accuracy of the rest of this paragraph. Let's start with the perfect ball that led to Martin Wright's downfall. It's `wright’ line and length put only one thought in Martin's head: back over Duncan's head. But the ball dug in, turned, and went through the gate on to Martin's stumps. This meant Duncan could put in to action his ingenious plan to bring short one of Matt Cook's rare cricketing opportunities. It meant allowing Matt to hit a huge six over the pavilion to bring on a spare ball - and a new bounce. Having clearly studied the spare ball in advance, Duncan directed the next ball under Matt Cook's bat. Duncan's demolition of Erratics’ middle order ended with the capture of Erratics' top scorer on the day, Ian Hooper, 40, who top-edged to Pete Wetherhead behind square.

Mark Hailwood, Nick Walding and Sean Webb probably won't mind their relatively short innings being skipped over, leading to 169 for 9. Chris Squire, now bowling, needed only 2 legitimate balls from five to bring Erratics' batting to a close. Not even September 2017's change to Law 21.7 ("The umpire shall call and signal No ball if a ball ... bounces more than once or rolls along the ground before it reaches the popping crease.") and batsman Martin Wright, umpiring at square leg, could save Ben Youngman, leaving Michael Nunns not out on 4, and the Erratics all out for 181. The family party, with wickets to Thomsons Joe and Jim, Chaves Fraser and Duncan, and Chris Squire, was rather intruded upon by a wicket to Martin Sharland.

So, it was time for tea, and it was a plentiful tea, which the Erratics now seem to have down to a tee.

The Mystics sent Martin Sharland and Fraser Chave out to face Ben Youngman and Nick Walding for the first powerplay. And I'd call it a draw. The first 14 overs bringing no wickets and only only 40 runs. Nick's particularly stingy 9 runs is either_or("to be commended", "worthy of the fine Jim dolled out, albeit supposedly for his breach of the peace"). Fortunately for Nick, the fine was accrued only over the day, as opposed to over the last couple of seasons. The bowling change saw Michael Nunns take Fraser's wicket and Mark Hailwood take Martin's fairly soon after. It was the first of three wickets for Mark: Adrian Borley and Chris Squire succumbing for a duck and nine, respectively. Meanwhile, Pete Weatherhead continued to add to Mystics' total at the other end, outlasting partners Sid Thomson (20, bowled Ian Hooper) and Duncan Chave (24, bowled Matt Crawford). This left Mystics with two overs and four wickets to get 27 runs for the win. Derek Matravers' embarked on this by cleanly striking the ball to the leg side. either_or(“Fortunately”, “Alas”), Mark Hailwood at square leg had rather long arms, reached down to his right, and plucked the ball out of the air with one hand. Matthew Borley saw out the innings with Pete, but the Mystics fell 20 runs short of the Erratics' total, which was either_or(“nice”, “nice”).

The draw meant that the Erratics retained the President's Cup, which was presented by Deke to Peter Thomson after the match. While it was, as ever, a either_or(“jovial and enjoyable”, “jovial and enoyable”) day, we'll be hoping to either_or("not", "significantly") turn the tide for 2019's fixture.
