Match report
Matt Crawford reports...

It was raining but there were optimistic faces all round, as the eleven, yes eleven (not twelve), Erratics assembled at Newton St Cyres. The first of a possible four T20 matches to be played this week, the away side looked to continue their brilliant if not suspicious form in twenty overs cricket.

Somehow the selectors had attributed the captaincy to Waldo, be it in error or lack of judgement, but the toss was thankfully lost, and we had to bat. Sent in were Andrew and Jonathon, who navigated the difficult soggy conditions at the start, before starting to accumulate, including a memorable cut for four from Andrew which raced to the boundary through the wet. On the sidelines, a spectator spotted a dubious doppelganger for Moeen Ali playing for the opposition, although the individual was indeed wearing a beard. Nick declared his expected total of 180, and the rest of us assumed he was referring to the number of yellow cards he was keeping in his pocket, with batting and bowling orders for each possible permutation of the game.

Andrew drove 'Corky' with a punch but only found the bowler's hands for the catch between his shoes. In came Danny, in his new specialist batting role, and kept the fielders guessing, including a good lofted shot over wide mid-on. Thankfully wearing a helmet, Danny gave the internationally recognised action for 'I just top edged it into my own face' after a ping, and later retired for the second game this season, allowing Fraser to enter stage right. Previous to this, Nick took Fraser to one side, to give some instructions: "You just play your natural game, and I'll try to play aggressively". "So we should both play our natural games", came Fraser's response.

One of Fraser's first contributions was an all run four, a shot from Jonathon towards deep extra cover, and benefiting from an overthrow, this brought Jonathon too to retirement. Captain Waldo took to the crease, trying to continue Jonathon's excellent running between the wickets even shouted through Fraser for two. A gamble on a ball that went through to the keeper, Fraser shouted for a single before falling on his sword, bravely running to the danger end as the wicket-keeper managed to get the ball to dislodge the bails. Ferro came on for a last over cameo, and added to his stack of not outs.

The total was 121, which some thought was on the low side, but considering the conditions seemed a decent total.

The drizzle drizzled, and the Erratics took the field. Waldo marshalled his troops, and Mark struck in the first over, the batsman playing one up to extra cover. Another wicket came in his second, and third! A sharp catch by Danny at point, and the Heads and Tails 'natural sportsman' caught by Jonathon at mid-wicket. All of the catches were sticking, the highlighter pink ball too heavy to bounce out of the hands perhaps. Mark finished with an excellent 4-10, strangely the exact same figures as Bernie Wilson in this fixture earlier in the season (although I might add Bernie didn't get a maiden!). Your reporter took over from Waldo at the other end, and first (legal) delivery, Fraser snaffled one, as did Chris in the next over. When the ball pitched, it was proving difficult for the batsmen to score.

With 50 odd required from 7 overs the target was still achievable, however with not too many left in the hutch it looked a tough ask. Young Will Choc made his long run up count, clattering the stumps and only conceding three runs. Fraser ended the game by rearranging the furniture of the non striker, albeit uniquely with a ricochet off the arm and knee.

So, another victory in the short form to add to the tally, and a very enjoyable game against friendly opposition, we marched to the Beer Engine for another good helping of chips and more.

And in the words of one spectator "I didn't not have fun".
