Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Sunsets on Fri 25 Jul 2014 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
The Sunsets won the toss and batted. We took wickets with regularity (Phil Walker Junior, guest starring for the Erratics, took 3 of them) and had them in real trouble at the half way stage. Then two left handers - possibly Williams and Chalkie - kept turning everything behind square on the leg side for runs. Hamstrung by the restriction of 2 fielders in that region (and an ability to keep the bowling outside off, I suppose) we were left waiting for one such shot to go to hand. Eventually it did to break the partnership, but not before Sunsets had recovered to a more respectable total of 116.
It was Fraser's 16th Birthday. He had already taken a wicket (Forrester executing a stumping by deflecting it onto the stumps off his keeping pads - let's say intentionally...) and was treated to the chance to open the batting with his Dad. The square leg umpire was feeling rather less generous, and judged Fraser to have been run out when it looked as though he had grounded his bat. Phil Walker launched a couple of back-over-the-bowler 4s in a brief cameo of 10, Duncan made 28 before being bowled, and at the half way stage we were, well, half way. 57 for 3 off 10.
That said, most of our recognised batsmen had already been and gone. Enter the unlikely match-winning partnership of Oughton and Hailwood. The former had been promoted to number 5 as a pinch-hitter, but instead chose to play like a born-to-it middle order batsman, working the singles and chipping the ball into the gaps. When Gareth departed in the 17th over for 22 the Erratics were left needing 15 from the final 3 overs. Hailwood held his nerve, whilst the bowler lost his, and a combination of wides and 4s helped the captain see the side home with an over to spare, and 25* to his name. The shandies tasted good back in the Kings Arms (or is it Head? I can never remember).
