Dunsford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 27 Apr 2008 at Unknown
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 59 runs

Match report The first game of the 2008 season, against an under-strength Dunsford team, began under threatening skies with the Erratics sent in to bat. Mileham made a ferocious start smashing two sixes among a succession of boundaries and the 50 was reached with only 6 overs gone. Mileham was then bowled for 37 bringing Sam Cook to the crease, and the expectation of more carnage.

However some good bowling slowed the run rate a little before Cook was stumped (controversially in his opinion) for 10. There followed a classic Erratics middle-order collapse with Turner, Davies and D. Pearson going in quick succession. Chris Ferro had until this point been circumspect but, perhaps worrying that he may run out of partners, he now began to accelerate. In a typically elegant innings - and now supported by Squire, Oughton and Pearson the Elder - Ferro was the last man out for 72, having hit a couple of sixes of his own and some drives of which Alistair Cook would be proud. Deciding that the score was sufficient Thomson declared with the Erratics on 180 for 9. The pick of the Dunsford bowlers was Poustie with 5-15.

After tea the Erratics took the field in confident mood, and in improving weather. The bowling was opened by outdoor debutant G.Oughton and last season’s “Erratic of the Year” D. Pearson. Oughton bowled aggressively and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket, finishing with figure of 0-12 off 7 overs (although his umpiring was a little eccentric – calling “wide”, immediately followed by “over”). D. Pearson, in two spells, picked up 3 wickets for 31 on a track that was not turning and offered very little in the way of bounce.

Dunsford were finding it difficult to score quickly and the pressure was building but resistance was offered by G. Davey, who was eventually dismissed for 41. After this dismissal an opening game victory became increasingly likely, and so it proved when Dunsford were bowled out for 121.

In a welcome return, and with his new gressorial (sic?) action, J. Burrows was the pick of the Erratics bowlers. A spell of accurate bowling, generating a surprising amount of pace from a slow wicket, yielded figures of 4-36 off 12 overs. The fielding was typically Erratic, but J. Pearson was unbeatable at point; leaping, diving and swooping on anything that came his way. Jonathan Kirby may have a struggle on his hands regaining a fielding position that last season he had made his own. The feeling of optimism for the season ahead could not be dampened even by Peter Thomson’s car suffering a puncture on the way to the pub (at least for those of us not in the car). Time to recapture the glory years!
