Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Marldon vs Erratics 3rd June 2018

Playing for the Erratics is a drug.

There is the joy of watching the team do well, the uncertainties it brings and the sheer happiness. Sometimes we lose the unlosable and sometimes we manage to pull off a miracle. Erratics vs Marldon on the 3rd June, we score 216 in 40 overs, irrepressible Martin Wright 117 Not Out, ably supported by George Greaves 36, extras 31 and Fraser Chave 18, the rest of us helped. Surely, we can’t lose this one? Marldon, thought the same, they felt 150 was a score to chase, however, 220 for 3, with young Ward 128 not out (he was dropped at various stages though) showed a different story. The game is such a leveller.
Cricket is another simulation of life. Life, like cricket, has a set of rules and the challenge is to do well by using your resources in the most optimal way and be the best version of yourself. Writing up the game is challenging this, but surely cricket teaches optimism. We may have lost and all seems so bleak, but we will still turn up for the next game. Things will turn around, cricket, after all, is simple.
The game was ably supported by the Torbay airshow, including a flypast as Martin achieved his century, actually, the single Red Arrow was early, so came back and gave us/ Martin a celebratory ‘roll’. Martin’s innings was at times sublime, full of boundaries, 6’s challenging on this ground with its local rules. Fraser pulled off a remarkable catch, (Marldon’s fielding was full of them). One wicket each for George, Fraser and yours truly.
This journey of self-discovery, you hardly know yourself unless you learn to appreciate cricket. The taste of defeat, the delight in winning, the heart-breaks, losing on the last ball, managing a draw, tied games, battling and battling till you pass out.
Life is easy. Cricket is hard.
Captain ‘Alf’ will need this on his next t-shirt and rather than Bill Shankly’s … it’s much more serious than that.
