Witheridge v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 29 Jun 2018 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 30 runs

Match report Day two of the tour looked to build on an enjoyable and friendly game played with North Molton the evening prior. Witheridge were the hosts, with a couple of faces recognised from the Rackenford team in the Big Bash League. Friday saw a number of reinforcements arrive in North Devon, with arrivals strategically spread over the course of the evening. Witheridge generously supplied a couple of temporary fielders in the meantime.

Anecdotally, the morning after the night before, the bunkhouse faithful had spent the day warming up for the match with a long walk under the sun, a self inflicted punishment for staying up too late. Waldo had decided to keep some of his energy in reserve for the game itself, and Duncan also opting out to maintain maximum match movement.

The toss was lost, as usual, and the Erratics took the field. Mark H and Nick opened the bowling and got off to a good start, followed by a great start, Nick bowling two of their top order batsmen. The Erratics fielded well, including our stand-in fielders from the opposition. The most memorable was Mark Hailwood’s double dive as he followed the ball around the boundary, saving a certain 4. Flicking and punching their way to the boundary, two opposition players reach retirement, before Fraser rattled through the lower order, taking a fine 4 wickets for 28. There was a tough chance that Waldo couldn’t quite wrap his jazz hands around, and no one was quite sure if the final ball run out was a run out or not, but the end result was a round 150 off the Witheridge 20 overs.

7.5 runs an over the required rate, the Erratics lost three of the top four batsmen for 0. The contest on the pitch was sidelined for a contest off the pitch, for the wobbliest walk back to the pavilion. The largest wobble seemed to be Jonathon Kirby, but he still maintains this was an 'ironic' wobble. A painful dismissal, (mentally, not physically), with the ball rolling slowly onto the stumps to dislodge a bail, somewhat different to the original use of irony in Greek tragedy. Perhaps the claim of irony, was itself ironic;

Socratic irony, noun: 'a pose of ignorance assumed in order to entice others into making statements that can then be challenged'.

From 500BC Athens, back to modern day North Devon, David Shackleton earned the full quota of tour fantasy manager points with yet another elegant retirement with 20 of his 30 coming in boundaries. Waldo and the Chaves added yet more boundaries, including a huge six from Fraser, and some valiant walking runs from an injured Duncan. In the end, we were 30 runs short.

We stuck around for a quick cider, before heading off back to the bunkhouse.

Later that evening in the tour shed, your correspondent became a priest, Waldo introduced to us his giant rat Gobbles, and Ben generously served up some excellent eggs, before announcing himself into the sex trade.
