Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 23 May 2014 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 2 Runs

Match report So, to the seat of power that is County Hall for the next stop on the Erratics Calendar. This may not be one of the most picturesque venues but, for the majority of the erratics, one of the more convenient. Mark Phillips lead the troops for the first time this season. Erratics lost the toss, but Mark soon had his first victory as captain, Persuading Rob Hayes to keep wicket. Rob made the fatal mistake of showing far to much enthusiasm when possibly, maybe, thinking about considering the role...Mark duly handed him the gloves!

Right on cue the sun came out just as the Sunsets' openers made the way to the crease. Not even Rumours of a Ukip bbq taking place next to the outfield could dampen sprits.
Willmot and Rutherford opened the bowling for Erratics on a matted wicket that had a decent amount of pace and bounce. The Sunsets' opening pair scored at a healthy rate, reaching 32 without loss after 4. Then on came John Curtis. His accurate, pitched up bowling proved very hard to get away. And when joined in the attack by young Ben Abrahams, the two formed a miserly Partnership, both going for just 2 off their first over. Ben then had a tricky chance dropped, but he didn't have to wait long, as Dad Gary took a tidy catch out in the deep later in the same over.
Jeff Haynes was next into the attack, again he kept things tight, going for just 11 from his 2 overs.
Willmot and Rutherford then returned for their 2 remaining overs. Nigel very unfortunate not to take a wicket that his bowling deserved. Willmot however had a bit more luck, Taking 2 caught&bowled chances in consecutive overs. In the closing overs runs began to come more quickly as the sunsets' middle order began to hit out. Now comes a slightly confusing moment for the reporter. As I remember it, Ben Abrahams was bowling, and again another sharp chance went down, only for history to repeat itself(well nearly) and Ben take a wicket later in the same over. However, looking at the scorebook, Dad Gary is credited with the wicket!? maybe this one can be sorted out in due course. For now i'll play safe a go with the scorebook.
Sunsets finished on a competitive 129-4(Inc 2, 25+retirements). A notable mention must go to Rob Hayes who did a fantastic job behind the stumps. And also Guy Clarke, who saved many a run on the boundary.

So a pretty tough score to overhaul as Martin Wright & Guy Clarke strolled to the middle. Sadly for Martin he was strolling back just 2 ball later. Out to a shot that John Curtis described as a "deep fried waft". Very tight bowling and good fielding form sunsets had the run-rate climbing early on. But then Rob had a great 4th over, hitting 18 form it. One enormous 6 pinged from the middle of his bat, further advancing his transformation into Adam Gilchrist! But a top-edge to the keeper ended Rob's very entertaining knock soon after.
This brought Martin Weiler in, and he and Guy, playing the anchor role, moved the score along with a combination of well taken singles and and a few crisp boundaries from Martin. But Guy was out caught for 10, and the sunsets' blowers began to turn the screw. Martin then became another top edge victim when trying to accelerate the scoring. Jeff went for 2, which left the Erratics 64-5 and facing an uphill battle.
But the came a great partnership between Gary Abrahams and Nigel Rutherford. Gary rotating the strike with quick singles and Nigel mixing singles and sixes. One of which endangering the life of his very own dog, when it came crashing into the patio area!
I'm sure victory would have been delivered if this union had been allowed to continue but, under the rules of the evening's match Nigel(much to the relief of the bowlers and his near pummelled pooch!) had to retire after hitting a four which took his score over 25. So with 3 overs left and more then 10 an over needed it fell to the well-set Abrahams and Willmot to try and get Erratics over the line. But despite some lusty blows the boundaries didn't come quickly enough and the visitors fell 2 runs shy.

Match Report Simon Willmot.
