Erratics Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets

Match report Gareth Oughton reports...

It was a lovely evening for a Friday night 20 over match, with the Erratics buoyed by a respectable start to the season and enthusiastic following several weather-related cancellations to dampen our fun. As ever, we were met with a warm and welcoming crowd at the Coaver Club, who were entertained not only by some wonderful cricket but also by a jazz band going through their paces ahead of the night-time festivities.

As ever, the recently re-laid artificial track offered the bowlers much in the way of pace and bounce, with a trundling medium pacer like your intrepid reporter even managing to extract the sort of lift one can only dream of elsewhere in Devon in May. Whilst I got very excited about pace and lift, Ben at the other end got on with the important business of actually getting wickets; striking first in his second over, whilst I was getting the odd edge that inconveniently flew away from the fielders and wicketkeeper.

Whilst things were tight to start with, Chalky, Bridge and Dew all managed to strike several lusty blows to our attack – dodging gaps in the field, or attempting to bludgeon a gap in Jeff’s hand when he had the temerity to attempt a caught and bowled effort. Despite the heavy hitting, Jeff bowled well and was unlucky to only pick a single wicket up from proceedings; making the most out of the lift he was also able to extract from the track. Breakthroughs eventually came in the form of a beautiful floaty ball from Prakash, which saw Dew castled. Danny then got a knick from Eric Bridge who had made a very rapid 18 – a knick so subtle that the only person who appealed was Jonathan. To the credit of the batsman, he walked; knowing he’d snicked the ball into the ever-reliable gloves of Andrew. From this stage, wickets and runs continued to rack up at a similar pace – the most memorable being a wonderful catch from Chris Ferro, saving a flat six with a seemingly nonchalant (for him at least) effort.

Despite a slow(ish) start, the Sunsets reached 100 in their 20 over; leaving the Erratics a challenging total on this lively wicket. Despite some excellent early bowling, Rob and Fraser got us off to a great start – Rob smearing his way to an early retirement at 30 and Fraser skilfully making his way up to 17 before being undone by a great ball by the ever-wily Bernie Wilson. Chris came out to anchor the innings, supporting Rob, Jonathan, Martin and Andrew as they built good totals of their own. Martin in particular seemed to enjoy the surroundings, gently playing himself in with successive fours.

Chris and Andrew saw us through to the end, getting us to our required total with a couple of overs to spare. Having struggled in the twenty over format last year, it was nice to record an early victory and even nicer to do it in the company of the Sunsets – fine opposition as ever.

In a weekend of three games in three days, this set us up perfectly for Saturday and Sunday against similarly lovely opposition.
