Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
Penny did a magnificent job raising 11 players for this 20 over game against Bridford at Clyst St George. We welcomed Mat Cook (MC1) on his return from Estonia and fielded two new players: Ben Zachariah (Ben Z) from Birmingham University was at Exeter giving a history lecture and was looking for a game of cricket; and Mat Crawford (MC2) not having played for a while and new to the area was looking for a team famous for nurturing young talent but couldn’t find one… These two players did wonders for our averages however. They considerably reduced our average age and more significantly increased our average hair length.
Batting first, Mat (MC1) opened and top scored with 29. Danny came in at number 4 and hit some lusty blows for a quick 17 before being caught and bowled. The score at this point was 50 for 3 from 10 overs giving some confidence for a reasonable score following some acceleration from the middle order? Which unfortunately didn’t happen: a mini collapse and some tight bowling reduced the run rate; Martin Weiler and Mat Crawford chipped in with a few; Greg Macqueen didn’t bother the scorers and Penny was unfortunately run out. And even with captain Chris Ferro easing to 22 not out at the end, a total of only 93 on a good batting track felt at least 20 runs short.
But…even for me there was some room for optimism when our bowlers made a good start with Mat Cook and Ben Youngman (Ben Y) keeping it tight with 12 off the first 4 overs. That allowed Ben Z the opportunity to toss the ball up with considerable success getting the first 3 wickets with 2 bowled and a catch at mid-off. It wasn’t to last though as the Bridford number 3, captain J Dunk, grew in confidence eventually retiring at 30 with several off yours truly who rather than finding the ‘corridor of uncertainty’, kept dropping it invitingly in the ‘dining room of help yourself’. So despite Jeff, Ben Y and Mat Cook picking up a wicket each, Bridford were able to score the winning runs at the beginning of the 18th over.
Although a disappointing result, on the positive side we may have discovered something new. Is ‘Benergy’ a new phenomenon?
Ben Y + Ben Z = MC2
Is it somehow connected to the lightness of speed?
My apologies. But I can’t finish without mentioning Krupaker’s fine wicketkeeper’s dismissal when the ball was hit skyward and he successfully completed the catch by ignoring a shout of ‘GARETH!’ emanating from somewhere in deepest darkest Exeter…
