Sidbury v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 09 May 2015 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Jonathan Kirby reports...

"At the end of the day," captain Mark Hailwood might have said, "we have to take the positives from this, going forward - and it remains true that Kevin Petersen is not the answer." With a PhD in English Drinking Culture, however, Mark would surely have come up with something more eloquent to say about our re-enactment of the second half of the third and final test against the West Indies earlier this month.

That said, there were definitely some positives:

1. It's great to have Sidbury back on the fixture list. They were the most genial and sporting of friendly opponents, and their village ground is delightful - like Marldon, but flat.

2. Will Katene not only put in an appearance for us, but brought his son, Jack, who took on the Jos Buttler batting role with aplomb, including successive 6s over backward square in a single over that saw about 20% of our total runs scored. Jack also bowled an impressive spell of leg-spin and was unlucky not to take wickets.

3. It's always great to play cricket on a sunny afternoon.

But there's no escaping the fact that we let ourselves down on the batting front, mustering only 84 runs and not even playing out our 35 overs. This isn't to take away from the quality of Sidbury's bowling, but our batting seemed to lack intention, and we have to learn to call for runs rather than rely on intuition. Jack's batting was the highlight, showing that if you played yourself in, it was possible to accumulate, even if the outfield was very slow.

When it came to bowling, Nigel Rutherford and Lucky Bandhu gave us a great start, and by the time that Bernie Wilson chipped in with a wicket, Sidford were reeling at 20 for 6. Maybe our score was, in fact, above par for the ground?

Not so.

As in the test match referred to earlier, two of the Sidbury team played themselves in, and then scored if not quickly, then without too much difficulty.

In the end, the run-rates of the two teams were not very different, but Sidbury scored the vital extra runs, and still had 5 wickets remaining.

Still, the game had been played in great spirit, and although the final few overs brought on that sinking feeling of inevitable defeat, we had made it a competitive game in spite of that batting performance.
