The Plymouth Inn v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 23 Jun 2005 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 36 runs

Match report It was a beautiful day, still sunny and hot when the Plymouth Inn batsmen strode out to the crease at 6:15pm, having let it be known that they liked to post a score of more than 200 in this kind of game. However, they reckoned without John Pearson who, for the second time this month, took a wicket with the first ball of the match. We were grateful to the sub fielder who took the catch at point!

Unfortunately it didn't continue like that. The batsmen rattled along at 10 per over in spite of Pearson's parsimony. As the Erratics sweltered, the Plymouth Inn swung their way to a total of 183, thanks in part to some late hitting by one of their team who took 23 off a single over from David Pearson - this was not a fair reflection on the quality of his bowling.
Might it have been different? Of course it might. Captain Orpen bowled well, and several times he was slashed and nicked into the air between gully and slips. Runs not wickets, however. So frustrating. Orpen did, in fact, take three wickets, but there could have been more. Wicket-keeper Kirby demolished the stumps four or five times, but the umpires only agreed once with his view of the relative locations of batsman's foot and the crease. At least there was a wicket for Penny Price in her first bowling spell of the season.
Were the Erratics dismayed in the face of such a formidable total? Not a bit of it, as Orpen challenged his team to chase it and win.

Messrs Kember and Kirby launched the assault, and were ahead of the rate required after five overs. Sadly, it couldn't continue like that... An injured and limping Kember was bowled. Dominic Prosser holed out to square leg and Sam Cook was brilliantly run-out. Then Kirby, having earlier deposited a straight six onto a Ford Fiesta in the car park, was caught going for another one, and that was more or less it. In the pursuit of what honour could be salvaged from the situation, young Oliver Kirby hit several boundaries, while Orpen drove his way to 27 not out - his contribution to an Erratics total of 142 - the highest this season from 20 overs. Again, let's look on the bright side of coming second again!

Footnote: Two moments of levity during the Erratics innings: First, Orpen skies a ball which travels a long way up, but only half-way down the batting track... no fewer than four fielders close in on it and the ball drops to the ground no more than an arm's length from any of them. Second, umpire Prosser announces that he's lost one of his stones. Cheap, but we had to laugh at something as news was coming from the radio of England busy losing to Australia.
