Longhorns v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 03 Sep 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report

Another glorious day of sunshine produced yet another exciting and close victory for the Erratics. Ken Horne was captain for the day, and I have yet to ask him if he won the toss because the day was extremely hot and we were fielding. I shall assume therefore he lost the toss, as taking the field on such a day took its toll on the dehydration levels, as indeed did the previous nights drinking.

However, with Ian Lisk bowling superbly from one end and Simon Orpen bowling equally well from the other, we saw the fall of two early Longhorn wickets, both falling to the guile of Orpen. This brought together the redoubtable Richard Watts and the swashbuckling Jamie Harvey, who between them put on a stand of 122 before Richard Watts was stumped by David Salter off the bowling of yours truly.

I would like to say (in case you think I might be dedicating this piece to the blowing of my own trumpet) that here was Richard Watts, a man of at least my years, a man who had scored 60 runs in intense heat, a man who was obviously gasping for a drink of water playing a very tired shot indeed and had nothing to do with any skills, perceived or imagined, pertaining to the bowler. This was born out by the fact that my second over was hit all over the park by Jamie Harvey and I was subsequently taken off, presumably to spare me any further embarrassment.

After tea, Ed Thomas and I opened the batting to some fierce bowling from Stuart Watts and Jamie Harvey. Ed defended well for several overs before being out caught off the bowling of Watts. I was out bowled by Harvey, and the Erratics were 61 for 2.

The Longhorns then suffered at the hands of our middle order, simply a matter of too many Cooks. Firstly Sam (32) then Matthew (44) batted well, hitting Andy Taylor for several sixes (You just cannot afford to bowl full tosses at these guys). We were close to victory but wickets were falling quickly to the bowling of Paul Tucker (5 wickets for 8 runs). It was left to senior Cook (38 not out) to see the Erratics to victory though it looked like he might run out of batting partners. The Erratics won with only two wickets in hand.

As the sun settled slowly over the Severn, the Erratics celebrated their victory at the Anchor in the traditional way. Simon Orpen was awarded man of the match for his steady bowling (3 for 38 off 11) and although some Erratics threatened to gatecrash the wedding party celebrations in the private marquee, thankfully this did not happen.

It remains for me to thank two Erratics for their valiant efforts on this particular day. Firstly, Ed Thomas who was unlucky in his quest for the elusive tortoise milk, and lastly, David (double-in double-out) Pearson for decorating the garden.
