Ipplepen v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 11 May 2008 at Unknown
Match was Drawn

Match report It was your reporter's first trip to Ipplepen, and after the stories the day before of how hard this place is to find, I was relieved to find it first time. On reaching the ground we were greeted with glorious sunshine and a wicket that was perfect for batting on. Some Erratics looked a bit weary from playing two games already this weekend, but others were all ready to knock this team over. Skipper James Burrows was looking slightly nervous about his duty today and so I enquired with him what he was going to do if he won the toss. After giving numerous reasons about how good a side Ipplepen are he finally said `I’ll probably field as I’d like a nice big tea today.’ Knowing that most of the other Erratics would not be happy about fielding in the 23 degree heat I kept my mouth shut. Well it happened, Burrows won the toss and put the opposition in.

Sam Cook opened the bowling with debutant Will Katene. Cook bowled at an electric pace and after troubling both batsmen the first wicket finally fell to a run out. This then lead to the Ipplepen assault, and a partnership of 135 for the second wicket. The Erratics ground fielding was, poor at times, but good in small spurts. During this partnership the bowling of David Pearson, Phil Ellis and Peter Hinds all got some treatment, so finally the skipper bought himself on along with Jonathan Davies. Davies bowled 9 overs on the spin and although going for 7 an over bowled very well without success. In fact after the game Davies himself commented on how 4 catches were dropped off his bowling, some of which mind you were very difficult chances! Burrows finally broke the partnership after making one of the batsmen play onto his own stumps. Cook then removed the big hitter from last seasons game with a beautiful delivery. By this time the Ipplepen opener had reached his 100 and was going after everything as he told me `I really want a shower now.’ He finally succumbed to Cook who had him caught behind by Matt Turner for 133. Ipplepen finally closed on 267 for 4 off only 35 overs.

After a good fill of tea and a check on the final weekend of the Premiership season, the Erratics went out to bat needing 268 to win the game. The innings started well with Chris Ferro and Tim Mileham looking very comfortable. Mileham then looked to launch the attack into the field next door but didn’t make it that far and was given a life by the Ipplepen fielder. He finally fell for 19 which then bough old slow pants himself, Davies, to the wicket. Davies and Ferro then put on a partnership which took the team into the final 20 overs knowing that they shouldn’t lose the game from here, but could they win it?

After the game Davies running was bought into question as on a number of 3’s run in the partnership Ferro almost lapped him. Davies knew he had to get on with it and FINALLY gave away his wicket for a well earned 17, which was constructed at about a run an hour (well it felt like that at times). This bought Cook to the crease with the Erratics needing about 10 an over for 15 overs to win. In the mean time Ferro completed his second century of the season but was then stumped for 100 trying to force the pace. Cook never really found his feet as he would have liked to and was stumped for 24 as the game was heading for a draw. Paul Molins contributed with 30 not out and Pearson who said he was going to slog everything, finished on 0 not out. So the Erratics finished on 209 for 4 off 41 overs.

After the game the analysis continued in the bar, and it was pointed out what an inspired choice Burrows had made by putting the opposition in. It was decided that Ipplepen would have probably won had we batted first, but in batting second we were able to avoid defeat. After the game it was also remarked that Katene was caught marking work while watching the cricket, so Mileham pointed out that he was in fact being paid to play cricket that day, now who wouldn’t want that? So although not one of the Erratics best performances, we avoided defeat and all had lots of fun and laughs throughout the day, which of course is the Erratics spirit. Also thank you to all our supporters who came along to watch us play, or just to sit in the sun.
