Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 20 Jul 2008 at Unknown
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 41 runs
Match report
The date was 20th July, and the Erratics in all their might assembled at Newton Poppleford in the hope that the game would be an extended version of the 20-over game versus Newton Poppleford which had taken place a few weeks previous, in which we had opened a serious can of whoop-ass upon them.
It quickly became apparent, that the highlights of this game would be provided by much more than just the cricket playing itself… such is the unpredictable joy and entertainment of ‘village cricket’. That being said it would be criminal not to give appropriate regards to the actual cricket playing which took place. Leadership was undertaken by the Ferro-meister, who, whilst risking being type-cast, is widely acknowledged as a brilliant captain. This season’s wins-losses statistics I believe bear testament to this. There was also Matt Cook, slowly dissolving everyone’s will to live in his search for cliché-expressions and phrases, also Ian/Basil Lisk, whose lethal bowling arm is cleverly hidden by a friendly persona and all round legendness. Ian – play more! There were also notable absences, including Brian Carpenter who I am told had injured himself in the journey between his hotel and Lord’s Cricket Ground?? [Strange, but actually true. Ed.] Also Sam Cook, who managed to be selected for the team despite being in Spain. We batted first, establishing a very acceptable 130ish. Extras the second highest scorer after Matt Cook’s 40. A varying and at times very lively bounce meant that Mileham, Kirby, Ferro and Lisk all fell victim to a slice of the ball and were caught. At least it didn’t annoy Tim too much… Then came tea which was fortified with a mountain of sandwiches provided by yours truly, due to a misunderstanding as to the match’s home/away status…
We took to the field, and I insist that there are times when this team fields as well as any league side. Honestly, tight doesn’t do it justice. The charge was lead by a stupendously athletic performance from John Pearson, diving all over the place with reckless abandon! This was twinned with the superb bowling displayed, particularly from Mr Burrows and Mr Lisk, who proved a lethal mix, too much for the majority of the Newton Poppleford batsmen. It was when Newton Poppleford were 36 for 6 that the pace slackened off somewhat, and understandably so! But Newton Poppleford staged an admirable fightback, and the Erratics possibly having slackened off too much (surely not!) were forced to once again up the game to clinch the win. These terms were met, and Phil Ellis took a great winning catch. I tried to start a bundle, but no one else joined in so it looked more like assault. Speaking of which…
Upon arriving at the pub car park, we were greeted with what appeared to be a Channel 5 programme entitled “When Christenings go Bad”. A mixture of Fight Club and Coronation Street if you will, featuring several rather drunk and smartly dressed locals exchanging shrieked words and blows, culminating in a chunk of hair being torn from a mans head by his partner. Mental or what?! It transpires that, still drunk from the night before, this group were celebrating a christening at a church, followed by after-ceremony drinks and a buffet at the local. Arguments and the like broke out, and the two cricket teams arrived just in time to see it all go chicken-oriental! Our opposition promptly declared that every cloud had a silver lining, and presented us with the untouched and forgotten buffet food!
All in all, a great game, as per usual really. Plenty of memories, from car park brawls, to my sodden and suspiciously odoured polo shirt. I still blame Irving, but I suppose we’ll never know…
