Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 26 May 2011 at 2:40 PM
Erratics Cricket Club Won

Match report Match Report and Photos: Daniel Thistlethwaite

“It’s not a proper bolognaise if it doesn’t contain carrots and celery”, Matt Cook.

This was not quite the erudite cricket conversation I thought I would be listening to, whilst sharing a car with some of my cricketing heroes from the Erratics en route to Cheriton Fitzpaine, two of whom went on to effortlessly guide the ball to the boundary and over it into the field of sleepy sheep (apparently completely unaware of the skills on display right in front of their woolly faces).

With our skipper warming up his batting one handed, and his left wrist strapped up, I wondered if this might be a sign of British trenches spirit or a new technique for me to learn, given this was only my 5th match ever. To put this into perspective, a certain Brian Carpenter was making his 100th appearance in another Erratics game at the weekend. Respect!

We batted first.

On a chilly, late afternoon with the threat of some showers, it was a day for those colourful V jumpers. Batsmen were scampering their runs as fast as possible and then racing even faster to the warmth of the pavilion.

After the prompt 6.0pm start, the score in this 20:20 game leapt along with boundaries hit left, right, and edged.

I know one isn’t supposed to mention one’s own efforts if reporting but hey, I hit my first boundary (and only) but you would think I had hit a six for the winning runs, such was the applause from the pavilion. Great support - thanks! It might have been a long way from the silky skills of Cook and Ferro, or the aggressive and surefooted-as-a-goat prowess of Kirby, all of whom contributed extremely well towards the win, but for me it was a start.

Cheriton came out to chase down 150. Not beyond them, but a challenge with all those sheep in the surrounding field whose sledging was becoming more vocal by the hour.

Our fielding was pretty good, if not exactly pretty, with three fine catches and the bowlers, (all eight of them), stuck to their task. Gareth Oughton bowling a line as tight as my father-in-law’s when hooking a 7 llb trout, and Greg Richmond a fine 3-12-2 and restricted the run rate from all but the talented Mike Foan, tricky Jeremy who had plenty up his sleeve and Will Chambers.

The weather prompted discussion of Duckworth Lewis but we managed to complete the match with a satisfying win.

The return journey, after a toasty few pints in the local village pub, finally yielded lots of the legendary cricketing lore of the Erratics that I had been hoping for plus some obscure umpiring rules, of which I know very little, developed into a quiz and finally a monumental list of all the openers that the Erratics have at their disposal with their individual special skills. A formidable statistic for any opposition.
