Match report Match Report: Ed Paleit

Depth in batting and bowling secured a convincing win on the bobbly outfield of Newton Poppleford yesterday. Thanks to contributions by Jamal, on debut, and Cook (S.), and some other double-figure scores, Erratics scored 224 off their 40 overs. Newton P threatened this total during a large fourth-wicket stand, but lost wickets regularly before and after. They were eventually all out seventy-odd runs short, a few balls before the close.

Erratics’ challenging score was built on a seventy-odd stand for the opening wicket, which included the shot of the day when Jamal deposited Newton’s opening bowler over wide long-on for six for his first boundary. He went on to make a swift and brutal 60, Phil Power giving solid support with some fine pulls and one elegant cover drive.

The middle order kept the score ticking over. Cook (M.) went off like a train with three driven fours off his first four balls but then had a skimming drive collared by mid-off. Paleit survived a close shout for caught behind and was then given out lbw off an inside edge before being recalled by the fielding side. A little later he played down the wrong line. After Weiler was unluckily bowled off his pads some late-innings momentum was provided by Cook (S.), who made an aggressive 47*, and Hooper (24*). Cook’s six over mid-off was still rising as it passed the boundary.

Newton’s reply began over tea with a glistening chocolate gateau evidently designed to wreck the visitors’ efforts in the field. Only two Erratics were tempted – but one duly bowled a number of full tosses which were smacked over square leg, and the other dropped a catch. Some moralizing is surely appropriate, perhaps along the lines of timeo Newtonos et crusta ferentes.

The cake-heads (who shall remain nameless) aside, we made a good start in the field. In the fourth over Paleit held on to a late cut at slip off Cook (M.). At the other end Jamal bowled with pace, accuracy and bounce and clearly unsettled the opposition. After receiving one particularly sharp delivery ‘below the midriff’ the batsman essayed an ungainly heave at the next ball, possibly with his eyes shut, and forfeited his off stump.

After another quick wicket, a substantial stand took the score over 100, with Newton’s wicketkeeper producing some lusty leg-side blows. His patience then boiled over at an accurate, testing spell from Ferro and he swung wildly over the top of a full-length ball. Two more victims for Ferro (one a brilliant caught-behind, standing up, by Forrester) unlocked the lower middle-order, whose attempts to scramble some dignity were then brought to a decisive halt by Weiler’s seductive parachute-droppers. Weiler’s first wicket clipped the top of off-stump after a swing-and-a-miss, and his second allowed Forrester to complete an efficient stumping. The last few wickets fell in short order.

A generous team even in defeat, Newton provided pizza and chips for those who made it to their team sponsors, the Cannon Inn on the Exeter Road. Glorious weather throughout, and some conscientious support from the Thomson clan, contributed to a satisfying day.
