Match report
Match Report: Greg Richmond
The Lympstone ground looked vast, with boundary flags spread far and wide. This looked like a game destined for few boundaries, and so it transpired. Lympstone went into bat on the back of a season that had seen them hammer many of their opponents.
The Erratics had to deal with the problem of no experienced keeper. Martin Weiler gamely volunteered for the role. He had never kept before, but cheerfully took up the challenge as if ticking an item off cricket’s version of ‘50 things to do before you die’. He went on to keep remarkably well throughout the innings.
Lympstone made steady early progress but were slowed down by a couple of wickets each from Phil Ellis and Jeff Haynes. Jonathan Davies came into the attack on the back of 2 years in Italy and no cricket. He started with a wide either side of the wicket and an overhead no ball, as if testing the outer ranges of the target area. As his accuracy came back he conjured a hat-trick, ably assisted by the Erratics catching, in particular Matt Cook. Indeed the Erratics catching was uncharacteristically excellent all innings. After this flurry of wickets, Lympstone ended on 118-8.
The Lympstone opening attack was pretty challenging for this level of cricket and Mark Hailwood was bowled in the first over. Matt Cook was the only batsman not to struggle against tight early bowling, and even Matt found it hard to reach far distant boundaries, before retiring at 26.
Jonathan Davies completed a fine return to cricket with an unbeaten 14 towards the end of the innings, but the Erratics fell well short at 91-6 by the end of the 20 years. (sic. Ed - is this what it felt like?)
Lympstone kindly laid on ale and hot food at the Globe after the game.
