Woodbury Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 12 May 2006 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report by Phil Power.

‘Why doesn’t he run towards it?”

Victory. Victory without a wicket lost. Some of the support from the chattering classes (Steve Berry actually – Bernie had already left) may even be permanent.

Emotion and adrenaline created at such times can lead inevitably to hyperbole. But as the narrative unfolded (and as Steve Berry fielding coach, eloquently put it, ‘Why doesn’t he run towards it?”) it really was a strong display.

The triumph has been based on a team ethic that had as its genesis the moment the powers that be agreed to the assertion that central contracts were the way forward, allowing future selectors the freedom to create ‘Team Erratics’ as an entity. Or is that only if the wearing of pink pyjamas for the indoor game becomes a reality? (Vice-Captain Orpen seems particularly taken with this idea).

There must be credit, too, for Captain Kirby who, given resources denied by various changes in selection pulled through. The first fifteen minutes or so Erratics fielded 9 players as we awaited the arrival of Martin Weiller and Matt Cook (we never did see Matt) and so finished the game with 10 payers. Captain Kirby began the task of instilling the idea that the team could compete as a unit. "It is pure self-belief. It has to come from within." The captain may not actually have said this, but you could feel it.

Perhaps the most surprising thing of all, though, was some of the calling. I must admit I have never heard ‘motor’ as a cricket call before. Credit for this has to go to our wicket keeper Matt Turner (Martin you really must run quicker between the wickets). I look forward to more mathematical aphorisms. The calling was amplified from the boundary, with quick quips such as “How to turn a catch into two runs” another Berry call and we weren’t even in the pub yet. Frank Pike gave his description of the esteemed ‘Edwardian’ umpire as a character from Camberwick Green. Unfortunately I don’t know of this so I’m not sure if it’s an insult or not.

94 for 0, winning with six overs to spare.

Team Erratic

Jonathan Kirby (Capt) 16 n.o.
James Burrows 1 for 21
John Carroll 2 for 9
Simon Orpen 0 for 7 & 13 n.o.
John Pearson 1 for 6
Frank Pike 0 for 19
Phil Power 2 for 18
Penny Price obviously underused
Matt Turner (wkt) 25 n.o. (ret)
Martin Weiler 25 n.o. (retired)
Matt Cook (no show)

The umpiring was strong and decisive, well at least from one end. Umpire Hitchcock had a good evening, I feel, calling at least seven of the nine umpire’s signals - I attach a drawing for your perusal.

Finally thanks to Linda Birthday Girl Isaacson for the fresh strawberries and cakes, to add to the fine fare provided for us at the Malsters Arms, even if Simon’s Mum didn’t win the raffle.
