Bridford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 30 Aug 2006 at 6pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report by Martin Weiler

As dark clouds hovered over the Teign Valley the Bridford and Erratics teams eyed each other up in the evening gloom. Something was awry. While Bridford had at least 13 players and debated who should stand down, the Erratics had just eight, including seven year-old Harry Molins and Max Ellis (12).

With captain Matt Cook one of the missing three (all apparently stuck in Exeter traffic), Ken Horne stepped into temporary charge and his first task was to accept an opposition offer for us to bat first. No toss and no real option.

Rain was in the air and the light getting poorer by the minute so an 18 over match was agreed. Also in use was a white ball which the hosts were keen to give a first outing to.

Paul Molins (10) and Horne (5) opened up with fine boundaries but both fell with the score at 15. With over half the overs gone Erratics had stuttered to 32 -4 with Pete Hinds (3) and Guy Clarke (8) also back in the tented pavilion.

Martin Weiler was joined by Jonathan Kirby and together they steadied the ship, grew in confidence, started taking quick singles and then hit out. Weiler, distracted of late by his modelling duties, hit two straight sixes off Johnny Hole (son of Steve Hole, a regular Teign Valley opponent of yesteryear).

It was never easy but 73 were added in an unbroken stand to take the Erratics to a modest 105-4. Weiler 34 not out; Kirby 26 not out.

As Bridford began their reply a large bonfire behind the bowler's arm added to the grey atmosphere. It didn't seem to distract the batsmen and although an opener played on to Phil Ellis the next partnership picked off the bowling pretty much at will. The only real panic for the home team was over the potential loss of their beloved white ball as it was repeatedly hit into the river!

Bridford made it look very easy as they romped to victory off just 13.4 overs. They were particularly severe off poor old Matt Cook (0-42 off 3 overs). In contrast the home skipper, Sean Dillon, hit a good 50 and so reached 500 runs for the season (apparently only one of three players to achieve this in Bridford's history).

After the game the home players were licking their lips at the thought of playing us again on Sunday...until we told them that no such fixture existed and that the team would be in Gloucestershire on tour. Cue dark mutterings about which Bridfordian had cocked this up!! (It turned out that they had no game booked for the weekend, so no-one had "cocked up"!)

And so to the Bridford Inn for a pint and very welcome sausage and chips. We all entered the lucky draw but that too went to Bridford. Just not our night!
