This was a reasonably exciting evening game, with rules of retiring at 25 and bowlers restricted to 2 overs each. Erratics batted steadily and effectively, with no less than 3 batsmen reaching retirement totals very quickly. Greg Richmond retired after 12 minutes at the crease, Chris Ferro after 10 minutes and Terry Pritchard making sure that there was a worthwhile exceedence to his mandatory retirement by finishing with a six. All this gave the impression of the confident acquisition of a very respectable total. Chris Fear was stable for 40 minutes whilst other batsmen came and went, either retired or out, until he was caught and bowled for 18. Chris Cook scored a rapid 14 before being out to a rather good running catch by mid-off.

The first few overs in reply by Newton Poppleford gave Erratics the false impression that an easy win might be in store. After 7 overs, the batting side were at only 29 for 3, with Penny Price, Phil Ellis and Greg Richmond having bowled one batsman each. However, by the 9th over, the scoring rate suddenly picked up and we began to calculate more carefully the required rate per over. Whilst this still looked difficult for Newton Poppleford to achieve, there was a period of a few overs when the result could have gone either way. However, some spectacular wicket taking soon put paid to those worries. Chris Cook took three wickets, one caught and bowled, one bowled and one run out. This last one started life as a skied catch off Phil Ellis’ bowling which was going to land just on the off side of the pitch about halfway down the wicket. Chris had a great run in from slip to get to it, but dropped it, only to gather the ball up and throw it for a direct hit at the bowler’s end, before the hapless batsman could make his ground! A few overs later this was followed by another amazing direct hit for a run out, with Greg Richmond achieving this from deep long-on.
