Erratics Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report Match Report by Martin Weiler

What a game of cricket! 20:20 may be the current vogue but this certainly proved that longer forms can be every bit as exciting and absorbing.

Stoke-in-Teignhead are a really friendly bunch and this is a fixture we all look forward to (although tinged now with sadness at the passing of the legendary Jim Maher). In fact our rivalry doesn’t go back that long. Our first game was in 1990 when Stoke were called Teignhyde and played at a stunning ground right next to the estuary. Ice-cream was served for tea!

Stoke have since moved to Netherton Park and have developed neat and compact facilities with spectacular views up to Dartmoor and down to the estuary. It has a family feel with several kids enjoying life beyond the boundary and a black Labrador that had just found eight cricket balls in the rough.

The home team won the toss and batted on a warm but breezy afternoon. They were obviously hoping for big things. As their opener left the first ball of the match to go safely past his off stump there was a cry of ‘get on with it’ from the pavilion.

But it was The Erratics who got stuck in and were soon among the wickets. There were rumblings in the home ranks and a ‘ten up’ announcement was met with sarcastic applause. Chris Ferro and James Burrows were bowling competitively – Chris bowling two and getting one caught behind by Peter Thomson; James securing an LBW. The ball kept low at times with Peter reflecting on the painful nature of keeping in these conditions as the ball kept thudding into the tops of his fingers.

One matter was settled early. Andrew Crawford was deputed to collect the match subs for a raucous (and unsuccessful) appeal for LBW…from square leg.

Things got worse for the home side when they fatefully ran on a misfield (Martin Weiler deflecting the ball with his leg to David Pearson who pounced to right the wrong). Stoke were now a very sorry looking 22-5.

If The Erratics were feeling a little smug at this point then they paid for it. We didn’t achieve a further dismissal as the sixth wicket partnership piled on over 200 runs (a near record for the home club) to take Stoke to 225-5.

Two Marks made their marks – Mark Lawrence 112* and (captain) Mark Russell 74* profited from a quick outfield and with increasing confidence made all the bowlers toil.

Special mention must be made for David Pearson who bowled a long and challenging spell of thirteen overs of leg spin. He was unlucky not to take a wicket and did well to keep the rampant batsmen to less than five runs an over.

This was a timed game and the increasingly deflated Erratics bowled 42 overs before the interval brought welcome relief and the usual delicious Stoke tea.

We made a contrasting start to our response. At one end Al Brunt was scoring boundaries at will while at the other Andrew Crawford blocked as if his life depended on it. He later reported that he had been instructed by skipper Jonathan Kirby not to give his wicket away. He took this absolutely literally and played out dot balls to his first 26 deliveries. When he finally got off the mark it was the end of the 10th over.

With the score at 33, Al was bowled for 26 (including six 4’s). We briefly wobbled but Martin Wright was in joyful form and when the 20 overs to go point came we were 79-2 off 19 overs.

So 147 to win – a par international 20:20 score apparently but a daunting task for us Erratic mortals. Martin stroked his way to a delightful 40 while Andrew started to hit out before finally being bowled for 21.

It was a painful ending – he screamed in agony in twisting his knee and fearing the return of an old injury. His cries will have had mothers locking up their daughters in Newton Abbot. Luckily a home supporter nursed him back to mobility with an ice pack and kind words of advice.

The scoreboard was kept rattling along by Chris Ferro and Jonathan Kirby (21) and suddenly the winning target was in sight. Chris timed his innings of 76* to perfection with a flourish of boundaries guiding us home with an over to spare. Stoke were generous in their praise and it was a happy Erratics team who gathered to reflect in the changing rooms.

These are always pivotal moments in the day and did not disappoint. There were soon deep conversations about Sartre and Camus. Martin Wright took off in French and others wondered if the game had really happened.

And so to the Wild Goose in Combe-in-Teignhead and a perfect gathering in the garden as the evening sun went down over the almost medieval scene of parish church and small holdings.

For Chris Ferro it was all doubly satisfying. An ancestor of his had been curate here in the nineteenth century.

But enough! As Sartre once said “If a victory is told in detail, one can no longer distinguish it from a defeat”. And as the jugs of beer circulated between the teams it became harder to tell who had won and who had lost. ("On est chacun le miroir de l'autre" Ed) Friendly cricket at its best!
