Match report Match Report: Simon Orpen

On the first of August 2009 there was no play at Edgbaston between Australia and England in the third ashes test. This was due to a sodden, waterlogged outfield which had suffered yet another wet and gloomy July and the abandonment of the day's play without a ball being bowled was entirely to be expected.

Some two hundred miles away in Dunsford a message was being left to the effect that our celebration match against The Mystics and Magicians was also to fall foul of the elements. Luckily, like a letter in a Thomas Hardy novel that gets pushed under a doormat by mistake this message was never received and at one thirty the combined might of the Mystics and the Erratics convened along with a healthy band of supporters and some notable former players.

After much discussion and some gentle persuasion of the groundsman it was decided that the game would start at half two and a new wicket was prepared. This was a game that everyone agreed needed to go ahead after all the planning and preparation. The match was dedicated to celebrating seventy five years of the Erratics and twenty five years of the Mystics - a fine undefeated century of friendly cricket!

Captain Peter Thomson won the toss and decided the Erratics would bat first. Brian Carpenter and Chris Ferro opened the batting and did well to lay the foundations for the innings on a pitch that occasionally kept low but mostly played surprisingly well considering the Summer downpours. After Brian departed attempting to push the score along Chris Ferro along with Andrew McRae set about the Mystics attack. When Andrew was caught Chris was joined by Matt Cook and there were hopes for the Erratics of an imposing total. Matt has apparently taken a liking to damaging parked cars while in Cornwall and pursued this with vigour here, his shots square of the wicket constantly threatening headlamps and heated rear windows. Matt was eventually run out for 47 and Chris stumped for 73 off the bowling of chief Mystic Jim Thomson. Tim MIleham, Simon Orpen and Jonathan Kirby scrambled a few late runs to edge the total past the 150 mark. The bowling effort by the Mystics had been uniformly excellent with Sam Cook particularly hostile.

The Erratics total of 154 was perhaps 20 short of what we would have liked but certainly seemed defendable. Tea was taken and enjoyed by all before the Mystics set about their target. Martin Sharland batted pretty much throughout the innings for his 53 and Duncan Chave progressed serenely for 64 before falling to Andrew McRae on his way to four wickets for 28. Clem Hitchcock making a rare and welcome appearance was stumped by Tim Mileham for 6 also off Andrew.

My own personal moment of glory must be recorded. Catching Sid Thomson at slip to give Andrew his fourth wicket. Yes, at slip! my first slip catch taken after about twenty five years of dropping them and I wasn't even put at slip by the captain! Wickets continued to fall but the damage was done and our total was indeed proven to be some 20 runs short. Generally speaking the Erratics bowled well and James Burrows' ten overs deserved more than one for 26.It was somehow fitting that Fraser was at the crease when the winning runs were scored, hopefully he'll be both an Erratic and a Mystic in years to come. The Mystics deserved their win.

After the match celebrations were held at Dunsford village hall. Beer was provided by Exe Valley brewery and excellent sausages by Piper's farm. Linda,Triin,Kate and Annie worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything went smoothly and a memorable evening was had. Commemorative medallions were awarded to all players and Peter announced the first batch of 'life members' of the Erratics including Steve Berry who was heard to speculate whether this meant we all thought he was past it (!)

Peter and Jim sported Linda's specially created novelty knitwear and a raffle completed proceedings. It was an honour to be present and here's to the next celebrations in 2034 when the Mystics reach 50 and the Erratics kiss the unicorn and point to the pavilion and acknowledge their century!
