Match report ‘Tantalisingly Close’ by Phil Power

The game details are already listed and shows wickets for Ben and Nigel and two for Nick, who also hit two sixes in a valiant effort to challenge a powerful and what became a formidable, winning Ashbuton score. Fraser was well on his way to being ‘retired’, with 21 but forgot to check his crease. Nigel was our one retiree, Ashburton on the other hand seemed to be in a hurry and managed a few. Nick and Matt were our other able batting fighters. Nick particularly not giving up and hitting consecutive sixes. Cricket provides plenty of circumstances, complications, characters and chaos. Fact is often stranger than fiction, but fiction is still grand nonetheless. This game showed once again it needs, no it is about these moments. I know from past experience how Jonathan can accurately suggest a needed or achieved score, but this time Captain Kirby established another cricket field placing: ‘Tantalisingly Close’. Matt took up the new position and almost immediately took a catch nearly two. So, sport, at the most exalted level, approaches alchemy. Two opponents or teams are locked in battle, apparently wrestling for dominance in a highly bounded and limited sphere, while in fact raising the possibility of creating something much more important. The tricky bit, of course, is that the participants have to remain, to a large degree, locked on to the narrow task at hand. The task this time proved too much. And I am reminded of one of my favourite pieces of cricketing analysis courtesy of ex England spinner John Emburey: "The f…king f…ker is f…king f…ked." We were well beaten!
