Broadclyst Pins v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 23 Aug 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 27 Runs

Match report Day night cricket is the new vogue and Broadclyst Pins and the Erratics gave it a try in a 20 over encounter in the beautiful surrounds of the Killerton estate.

But more of the dark side later because the initial concern for the visiting Erratics was the wildlife. Not the local cows which got Chris Ferro into all sorts of verbal trouble in the previous game here but the unwanted attention of the wasp population. One of these took a particular liking to Nick Walding (or more precisely his pre-match meal). Most Erratics had never seen Nick move so fast as he took evasive action.

This clearly upset Nick’s rhythm as, opening the bowling, his first two deliveries were wides. It was all happening for Nick as he then bowled a straight one and got a plumb LBW. The world suddenly seemed a better place. Or did it? The batsman declared he had hit it and remained at the crease. Another wide duly followed. This game was not going our way!

Some tight bowling from Kruppaker (1-16), Power (1-11) and Fraser Chave (2-11), plus two wickets for the more expensive Siva, helped restrict the home side to 98-6. Captain Chave also contributed with a superb diving catch although in his usual modest way he reflected “I didn’t really need to dive for that” before starting a team discussion on “crocodile style” catching. Cows, wasps, crocodiles – if animals are your thing then the Erratics are the team for you!

And so to the Erratics reply. The omens were there when Club President Peter Thomson announced he was not staying to watch our innings. He obviously had some terrible premonition of what was about to happen. Or maybe as it was getting so dark he just thought it would be impossible to see what was happening.

And it was certainly becoming darker by the minute. There wasn’t even a chance of illuminating lights from the pavilion. The generator had broken down and it was pitch black inside and increasingly the same out.

Annie Chave scoring said “I can’t see a thing” and Penny Price added “It’s so dark even the rooks have gone to sleep”. When an appeal for LBW was turned down another wag commented “If you can’t see it, you can’t give it”. When home umpire John Marks turned and walked off towards the pavilion we all assumed he had called time on the day night experiment. But he simply said “I just want to check the pasties aren’t over cooking”.

To be fair Broadclyst bowled very tightly and effectively and we were always behind the required rate – just 26-3 after 10 overs and 54-5 after 15. Only Chris Ferro took his score into double figures – retiring on 31 and then re-appearing at the death to move on to 38 not out.

Amazingly the last two overs were played in some of the lightest conditions of the evening. As if turning the floodlights on, a bright sky suddenly emerged framing the pavilion with a wonderful glow [see the 'Photo galleries - 2017 season' for a snap]. As Chris went back out to bat the incoming Penny said “Sorry but at least you can admire the sunset”.

The Erratics finished on 71-9 and Broadclyst were worthy winners. Thankfully the pasties hadn’t overcooked and these and the evening sundown were much appreciated even if the new animal on the block was now the pesky midge rather than the cow, rook, crocodile or wasp (not to mention the distractingly noisy buzzards).
