Erratics Cricket Club Won by 29 runs
Match report
Tedburntober 2017 II would bring Erratics’ season to an end. Well it would if we could get in to the pavilion. After Danny Williamson guided first-time skipper Ben Youngman to the village shop, back to the ground, to the pub, back to the shop and then back to the ground, The Rec’s chairwoman, Pat, came to the rescue with a clubhouse key. And we were in, and if I were a Spotlight weather presenter, I might describe the weather with something ridiculous like `better than it should be for the time of year’.
Negotations between Ben and Sunsets skipper - and part-time Erratic - Bernie Wilson, saw Erratics head out to bat, which helped avoid a further delayed start. Bernie was delighted to be able to report to his team-mates that he had secured the services of a "ninja fielder", which was arguably appropriate since he was referring to Chris Ferro. All argument disappeared when it turned out that Bernie had actually said "an injured fielder", which was certainly true in this case.
Paul Molins and George Cockburn opened, and were greeted by Bertie Creer, of Clyst St George fame, who, without the usual bounding run-up, still provided enough pace and bounce to claim both wickets, with the help of a Sunset-for-the-day Chris Ferro diving reaction catch at slip. Ninja after all?
Krupakar Nallala and Nigel Rutherford then entered and soon found their rhythm, with four sixes for the former, and a series of powerful swipes to beat the waterlogged boundary for the latter, en route to retiring on 54 and 50, respectively. Martin Weiler’s 38 and Siva Subramanian’s 17 added to the total, until Jonathan Kirby was left not out as we reached 30 overs with 195 to defend.
I’ve heard stories of Erratics’ infamously poor teas. But perhaps these are a thing of the past, based on the quality of George’s spiced pear cake alone, and definitely quantity, to the delight of Penny Price’s pigs.
Targeting 196, Sunsets shot out of the traps with an early run-rate of around 7 per over, capitalising on our loss of the ill Nick Walding. Fortunately Dan Thistlethwaite was at hand to take his place in the field.
While capturing another Sunset-for-the-day Freddie Creer’s wicket temporarily stifled Sunsets’ run rate, Tom Wilson then proceed to add to their tally. Wickets to Krups and Siva, and some additional frugality of Nigel Rutherford and Ben, however, ensured that Sunsets kept behind the required rate.
With occasional high-scoring overs, Sunsets’ remained a threat until the very end. Eventually, though, 165 was posted in 30 overs, in game much closer than a 30-run deficit might suggest.
Both sides retreated to The King’ Arms, where it was apparent that good day’s cricket was had by both sides. Not long ‘til April...
