Sunsets v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 18 May 2018 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 20 runs
Match report
An exciting game, not simply because we won, but rather because it seemed possible at times that we might not, despite scoring 171 from our allotted 20 overs.
Students of Erratics lore will, of course, be aware that in a 20-over game in June 2006 we had posted 196 against Newton Poppleford and contrived to win by only 4 runs, in what is our highest-scoring game in this short form. Martin Weiler can be said to have saved the day 12 years ago, with a spell of 2-0-7-3. Despite the reassuring presence of Mr Weiler in this latest game, there were moments in the Sunsets' innings, such as the first five overs and the last five, when some Erratics were quaking in their boots. Perhaps captain Martin Wright should have tossed Martin Weiler the ball? Maybe he didn't do this because he was doing an excellent job of giving everyone a game, and Weiler had already had a bat.
Lovers of shockingly badly-written fantasy fiction, and aficionados of the Beatles noted that this particular Erratics line-up made it possible to call out, "George... Martin... George... Martin..." for there were indeed two of each. But I digress.
Erratically, we conspired to make this an exciting game by dropping quite a lot of catches. I lost count of how many. Perhaps this was because they were all too easy. Instead, 3 of the hardest chances were brilliantly taken - David Shackleton tumbling forward to take a juggling catch at mid-wicket, George Cockburn running backwards to take a swirling steepler at backward point, and Siva Subramanian taking the spinning ball that came down with proverbial snow on it to remove Tom Wilson whose brutal batting had threatened to steal the game. The fourth catch of the innings was taken by Fraser Chave, a ball that was hit straight to him behind square, or maybe straight at him - he had no time to dive or fall to avoid this one...
There were some bowling highlights too, notably from George Greaves who bowled the only maiden of the match, the final ball of which knocked back the off stump of the batsman who had become increasingly pressurised. And I have to say that Ben Youngman produced some startlingly zippy deliveries in his spell, which secured him 3 wickets.
The Erratics had batted first. Duncan Chave retired on 30+ for the second time in 3 days. David Shackleton's debut for the Erratics was graced (I use the word advisedly) with a stylish 32 not out. Martin Wright thumped 11 from 5 balls, including a trademark towering straight six that was copied a while later by Fraser Chave who, with Martin Weiler and George Greaves maintained the momentum established early on by Duncan and Jonathan Kirby (me). I may not have bludgeoned any sixes like my fellow batsmen, but also contrived to score enough to be forced to retire.
A significant feature of this Erratics innings was the dearth of dot balls. When captain Wright had asked me to open the batting, I had promised to "get on with it, or get out" because this is what is required in 20 over games. All the batsmen got on with it and, by George, only Martins got out.
Footnote:
It was great to see President Peter Thomson who watched the first part of the game and who had to be reminded repeatedly that the batting performance he was witnessing was being given by the Erratics. Now, how that for hubris?
