Captain Kirby (a late appointment) was on good form for the game against Marldon. Full of encouragement and warnings for the Erratics if they didn’t do likewise. ‘It’s so quiet out here I can hear the grass grow’ and ‘same field as in the beginning’. This religious fervour worked as from a strong start the Erratics slowed down the Marldon scorecard to give us a reasonable chance of getting the 143 score, at 4 an over.

Marldon’s score included a 50 not out by their captain - not out, as he retired. This would prove a challenging point later for our captain. Our reply started slowly with Marldon’s opening bowler’s figures showing 6 maidens from his seven overs. Martin and Duncan, however brought the game back towards us. The pair took control of the situation, both looking likely to not get a century today (source M. Wright). Martin fell 7 short of his half-century, Rithvik joining Duncan and kept us up with the rate.

Here was the captain’s dilemma, there hadn’t been a discussion/agreement about a batsman retiring on reaching their 50. Should we call Duncan in, should we just play on? Honesty won and although Duncan didn’t know his score, he guessed something was afoot when Jonathan came onto the field to talk with Marldon's captain. Duncan now on 53 attempted a ‘scoop’ over the wicketkeeper's (a svelte Martin Pragnell, courtesy of the lockdown, apparently) left shoulder. Fraser with his new lens and tripod didn’t capture this moment but suffice it to say it was the only ball Duncan missed.

This was probably where the chance to win the match for the Erratics ended, particularly when Fraser was run out. Marldon continued to bowl accurately and field feverishly and we fell two boundaries short.

Sadly, there was a rumour that the parish will force a change of use for the Marldon ground, to allow fetes to take place or worse to use the land to build on. I am reminded of Douglas Adams writing in ‘Life, the Universe, and Everything’. Could we step in and save this wonderful game? Adams discusses a Krkkit warship carrying deadly white robots escaping to rearrange the Wikkit Gate composed partly of Marvin the android’s artificial leg. The Krikketers are described ‘as humanoid aliens who are charming and polite (Erratics), despite their cosmocidal tendencies (Erratics again). They are capable of composing incredibly moving and poetic music (listening to the grass grow!). Some of the younger? Krikketers are interested in developing sporting links with the rest of the Universe (definitely Erratics) rather than destroying it’. Of course, there is the small bit that Arthur Dent, the protagonist, and his mate Ford Prefect, landed in the middle of the pitch at Lord’s Cricket Ground riding a Chesterfield sofa amidst great cheer during an Ashes Test, with England needing 28 runs to win. This surely resembles a fete or even a house?

I suppose the moral is do remember the golden words: Don’t Panic.

Apologies for the meme but it is fun.
