Erratics Cricket Club Erratics v Denbury on Sun 19 May 2013 at 2.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets
Match report
Lucky Bandhu reports
Amidst the typical erratic weather, the game started at Dunsford. Surprisingly, the wicket looked drier than ever, promising to be a good batting track. Skipper Jonathan won the toss and welcomed the visitors to put runs on the board. The opposition confounded his hospitality for a wrong decision and was gently warned about their batting strength. Jonathan’s decision was however well justified by the opening bowlers, Suhaib and Varun. The batsmen had no answers for their swing and speed combination. Unfortunately, they were too good to find the edges. Though the batsmen survived the opening spell, there was still no respite. Young Harry took over from Suhaib and Prakash joined him from the far end. Prakash drew the first blood; his consistently probing line outside off-stump got him two identical dismissals in his third over. Both the times Lucky was at short covers to complete the catch. Harry, who was a bit unlucky so far with edges flying over the gully region, finally got his well-deserved wicket when the ball found Prakash in the covers. It was a very good catch under pressure because normally you would see a player calling for his catch, here the whole team was shouting “it’s yours’ Prakash”. A sigh of relief was quite apparent when he completed the catch. Harry returned the favour in the very next over, taking a good catch to fetch Prakash his third wicket. Prakash so far was involved in all the dismissals and threatened to run through the side quickly. We know what happens when such situation arises. To give the opposition a fair chance he was taken off the attack. Matt and Fraser took charge from them. Matt was gifted the simplest of caught and bowled chances on his very first ball, with his sharp googlies, he kept them guessing. On the other end Fraser was proving quite hard to get away. Mark Phillips was given the ball to try the batsman’s patience with his slow leg spins. After a couple of overs, Mark found way to his first wicket, when he lured the batsmen for a drive only to be caught at covers by Prakash (no pressure this time). It seemed like the experienced batsmen were coming down the order, looking more determined to protect their wickets. The strategy did surprise us though, but Fraser sneaked his way to trap two LBWs in the same over. In the first over of his second spell, Prakash brought one back in to castle the settled batsman. He obtained his best figures for Erratics. This was one of those days where the skipper could not rely on anyone to give away runs, so he had to come himself. Jonathan was quite generous with his loopy spins. The last thing Denbury wanted at that stage was a run out and that is exactly what happened. Denbury never looked comfortable throughout the innings; they managed to put up only 85 runs on what looked like a good batting track.
Chris and Lucky opened the batting for Erratics. They started cautiously, not losing any wicket before tea. Chris’s sandwiches and Suhaib’s savouries were the main highlights of the tea-break. After a relaxed tea, Chris and Lucky went on to finish the job. Chris as usual, scored runs with ease, punishing the bad balls and nudging around the singles. He was well supported by Lucky on the other end. Erratics proved to be a better team in all departments. An early finish gave us a chance to have a taste of modern or perhaps future cricket. Both the teams decided to have an 8-8 over match to buy some time for the pub to open. It turned out to be a good match, the batsmen had to retire after scoring 10 runs and maximum one over for each bowler, everybody got a chance to chip in and enjoy the shorter format of the game. A beer in the Royal Oak inn, exchanged pleasantries marked the end of another lovely day of cricket.
