Erratics swoop for John Lloyd Trophy

Now in its 25th year, the John Lloyd Trophy is contested in a much-anticipated annual fixture between Lustleigh and the Erratics. And yesterday it was reclaimed by the Erratics with a convincing win. Yet we were unable to return from the moor with our spoils, for want of a proper pavilion in which to house the handsome trophy. The closest the Erratics have to a pavilion is the overflowing kitbag; a trophy wouldn’t last long in there (not much does). And so Lustleigh keep the trophy safe until next year, and hopefully another highly enjoyable match at this beautiful ground.

Our captain for this glorious sunny afternoon, Chris Cook, won the toss and elected to bat. Yet he had clearly not anticipated the cavalier attitude of some of the top order when faced with some flighted deliveries from Lustleigh opening bowler Brewer (some connection with the splendid Cleave pub nearby?). Before very long at all he had deceived Paul Molins, Sam Cook and Phil Ellis, leaving the Erratics precariously placed at 18 for 3. Meanwhile opener Chris Ferro, who made his debut just last week, was keeping his head down. Joined by Chris Cook in at 5, the pair set about consolidating, Ferro happy to anchor while Cook accelerated. The pair put on a splendid 157 run partnership before Cook eventually holed out for a marvellous 86. Ferro stuck around while Birbeck and then Prosser sought some quick runs, departing for an elegant 68. Very elegant indeed. Our scorer certainly thought so.

5pm. Tea. 234 for 7. A big ask for Lustleigh. Sam Cook and Carl Knappett opened the bowling, the former producing impressive pace, and the wicket of Cheeseman, comprehensively bowled. Seeing little help in the wicket for seamers, captain Cook opted for the loopy legbreaks of Paul Molins – who promptly lured two Lustleigh batsmen into ill-judged swipes, bowling both. In at 5 was a smallish chap of 12; stature proved immediately deceptive, however, as he promptly displayed both technique and poise in slowing the Erratics onslaught. But like 4 other Lustleigh batsmen he made it into the 20s but not beyond. Wickets were shared between the bowlers, with the last falling to Chris Cook with 5 overs to spare, leaving Lustleigh 81 short.
