Clyst St George v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 05 Aug 2007 at 2.30pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 96 runs

Match report by Ian Lisk

It was a glorious, hot and sunny day - a collector's item this summer! There may or may not have been a toss, we may or may not have agreed to anyone reaching fifty then having to retire, the Erratics did not have eleven men and Matt Cook did not have a pair of socks and so had to dig some pretty rank looking specimens from the depths of his father's kit bag!

Whatever, the Erratics batted first and stumbled to 119 for 9 off 20 overs but at least ultimately ended up with a full complement. The total would have been significantly less but for late rallies from Chris Ferro with 40 and Peter Hinds with 19. For Clyst St George young J. May was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 23 after having to be called on to join the fray half way through the first over when Clyst's opening bowler went down with a badly sprained ankle.

The Clyst reply got off to a sticky start as the top order struggled against the swinging ball, Ian Lisk taking 2 for 6 as the first 3 wickets fell cheaply. S. May then came to the wicket and calmly smacked 50 then retired and having seen Clyst to 99 for 3 with 6 overs left, no one, least of all Mr. May, expected to see him at the crease again. The collapse that followed was Erratic-like in its nature and was only interrupted by a bit of an altercation which resulted in Matt Cook doing rather better with a throw from the square to the boundary than he usually does from the boundary to the square! Clyst somehow ended up all out for 115 as Phil Ellis starred with 4 for 5 off his 3 overs including the 'first' ball dismissal of S.May with the last ball of the innings.

A fantastic lunch ensued and the day grew hotter - a bad combination for any fielding side and the Erratics, having won the 20 over match, had no hesitation in asking Clyst to have a couple of hours or so in the field.

The Erratics batted very well and the opening pair of Jonathan Davies (15) and Chris Ferro (86) putting on nearly 100 for the first wicket. A couple of little wobbles followed before Chris Cook came in and made the game look ridiculously easy in making 98 not out as the Erratics reached 254 for 5 in just 35 overs. D. Grant was the pick of the Clyst bowlers with a hard working 3 for 78.

A sumptuous tea followed. All at Clyst St George should be congratulated for putting on such a superb occasion.

Clyst initially struggled with the bat in much the same way as they had done in the first match and it was again left to the middle order to make up for early losses. J. Grant and S. May shared a half century stand and at 142 for 4 with 15 overs to go and the ball at that point disappearing to all corners of the ground it looked like being a tight game.

A collapse every bit as 'impressive' as the first game's then ensued as Clyst capitulated to 152 all out. Jonathan Davies returning match winning figures of 4 for 4 off 2 overs with able support from David Pearson (1 for 42 off 7) and Matt Cook (2 for 21 off 10). Matt Turner ably led the fielding effort behind the stumps whilst Jonathan and Ollie Kirby starred in the field on a day when not a single catch was dropped - an Erratics record?

The day closed with the sun disappearing behind the incoming 'altocumulus castellanus' and within a couple of hours it was raining again - summer 2007 was back!
