Painswick v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 30 Aug 2007 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report by Simon Orpen

The Erratics tour 2007 started with the usual business of setting up camp and the obligatory pint at the Anchor before we set off for Painswick and the opening fixture. This was when we first noticed evidence of the damage caused by the summer’s floods as the ususal route to Painswick was not passable due to damage. We all put our faith in Chris Cook who led a convoy of Erratics down some pretty remote lanes but obviously knew exactly what he was doing as we arrived on time (with the exception of Ed Thomas) and were soon on the field bowling to a young Painswick side.

The opening batsman survived a loud appeal for an edge to slip (!) which the umpire must have been unsighted for but John Pearson soon had a wicket caught behind on his way to 2 for 19. The real story of the innings though was that of Pearson the younger who took 5 for 37 in his seven overs. The Painswick number four, Telling, scored an impressive 42 and with a couple of other useful contributions Painswick posted 171. Other useful Erratic bowling came from Orpen with 5 overs 1 for 12 and Chris Cook with 2 for 9 off his two and a bit overs.

After a great tea we set about the Painswick total with Paul Molins opening and making his way to 22 while wickets fell at the other end including that of captain Jonathan Kirby. When Chris Cook was out for 38 with still more than 100 runs required we started to panic a little – that is, everyone except David Pearson and Sam Cook who scored 30 and 65 not out respectively in a classy and beautifully judged partnership which nudged us home and kept up our winning streak at Painswick.

After the match drinks and presentations were had in the pavilion. Jonathan was presented with the captain’s hat and Sam and David rightly were awarded man of the match and moment of the match.

( This photo of the man taking a picture of a half pint of beer must be explained – apparently he hates pouring half pints and always makes a mess of it – this was his best ever effort and he wanted it preserved for posterity!
And we thought it was just the Erratics that did things like that… )
