Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets

Match report by Simon Orpen

And so to Frocester with a win under our belts. Last year at this ground we were completely marmalized by a young South African batsman - many of the balls he dispatched over the main road are still missing in action. For this reason, and also because of the fact that they normally have leftovers from the Frocester beer festival for sale at 50p a pint I decided to sit the game out and do the match report with a refreshing drink to hand.

First shock was that the electronic scoreboard wasn't plugged in! Some of us had been dreaming all year of playing with this machine but obviously Frocester remembered our lack of skill with it last year and we were directed to a an Erratic-proof manually operated alternative! Second shock was that the form-man (Sam Cook) was loaned to the opposition as batsman and Henry Perham as bowler - would we regret it?

We opened the batting in a 40 over game with Edmund Thomas and Richard Perham. They made a steady start with Richard going on to paddle his way to 22. An excellent 46 from Paul Molins followed as did a 47 from Captain Chris Cook. Useful contributions from Jonathans Kirby and Davies as well as a handy 41 from E.X.Tras got us past the 200 mark setting a target of 202 for a young Frocester side to chase.

As it turned out it wasn't too much of a chase thanks to various members of the Wincup family, the opener Purchase and a certain Sam Cook batting at number 3 and delighting in the chance to loft both father and brother back over their heads on numerous occasions on his way to a well paced yet destructive 78. (Actually, it was devastatingly fast... Sam had scored 60 before anyone realised he had made 50... Ed)

The youngest Wincup impressed with his strokeplay as he and the captain Adam eased their way home. Erratics' bowling was lead by Edmund Thomas with 3 for 22 which earned him the chance to wear the man of the match hat. Chris Cook also
chipped in with two wickets in his eight overs.

After thanking Frocester and their captain for hosting the match we headed off to the George for dinner and gave the one person running the kitchen the shock of her life when all 20 of us turned up for food just as she was thinking of an early night! Bizarre word games were invented by Matt Cook and Richard Hitchcock and a good evening was had by all before heading back to the Anchor for hats and fines.
