Cheriton Fitzpaine v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 15 Jul 2012 at 2.30 pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
Match Report by Nigel Rutherford:
At last enough of a break in the weather to allow the fixture against juggernaut, Cheriton Fitzpaine, to go ahead. Blustery, chilly, but with enough glimpses of sun and blue sky to remind us that this was still, technically, mid-Summer! The Erratics elected to bowl on a pitch which, although never going to be easy to bat on, was in remarkably good condition, considering ……
All the Erratics bowlers produced tidy spells and wickets fell regularly, runs coming quite slowly due to the squelchy margins just inside the boundary preventing many a crisply-hit ball from completing its rightful journey to the ropes. Varun and Harry bowled particularly well, the latter bowling out a couple of batters with full-length, swinging deliveries, to finish with 2 for 26 off his eight overs. Fielding, unusually good, provided three champagne moments: Dan’s sliding stop on the boundary, which, due to minor timing issues, meant that most of his body had already passed the approaching ball as it neared the ropes, but with his foot still in contention, he dexterously flicked the ball away from the danger zone to save a certain four.
An edge off Rutherford’s bowling had the ball seemingly uninterrupted to the boundary. However, it had not counted on Duncan who, giving Strauss a run for his money, came flying through the air, bringing its journey to its end with a great catch. Final mention in the field goes to Thomas who was playing in the last of his two-game cameo for the Erratics. He left his stamp by taking a spectacular catch at mid-wicket and, were it not for the superfluity of an additional ‘o’, he would also have shared top spot for surnames.
After a burst of runs in the final over, Cheriton ended on 134 from their allotted number of overs.
Tea was an excellent ‘build-your-own’ ploughmans, including a delicious array of chutneys, relishes and coriander-seed infused pickled onions. The cooler weather certainly helps to build an appetite!
After the break, the boys from Bangalore, Lucky and Varun. opened the innings for the Erratics. Within the space of a few overs, both had fallen foul of tricky deliveries: Lucky to a ball leaping to a good length and finding the edge, Varun to one staying a bit low and hitting him in line. A nice partnership then ensued between Duncan and Dan. After a watchful and patient innings. Dan slightly misjudged the leaving of a ball and was bowled round the back of his legs. Not the only person to leave a straight one, next in Matt, with his heart in Estonia, found total concentration difficult and gave unhindered passage to a ball travelling directly to his off-stump.
Duncan meanwhile, in only the second outing of the season, was knocking the ball around nicely when, to liven things up a bit, he launched his wife-seeking missile, in the form of a ball smashed for six, at exactly the point where Mrs Chave stood enjoying the cricket on the boundary. A self-preserving dive for cover meant no damage was done and Annie came up smiling.
The family mini-drama came to an end a couple of overs later, when summary justice was despatched by Fraser who had his Dad caught and bowled for a good 40.
Fish, meanwhile, once again providing the backbone to the Erratics batting was joined at the crease by Rutherford. Between them they managed to knock off the remaining runs required to give the Erratics victory, with a couple of overs to go. A really good, spirited game of cricket, followed by a couple of ales down at the local (‘Do you take cards? No, we’re not that modern.’) pub to finish off.
