Lynton & Lynmouth v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sat 16 Jul 2005 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won by 187 runs
Match report
Report by Ian Lisk.
Captain: Simon Orpen
Lynton's ground is billed as 'spectacular'. The weather was forecast to be hot and sunny. A surplus of Erratics wishing to play. There was even time for a half-hour net session and a bit of a warm-up before the game. What could possibly go wrong?!
Luck was still with us as our great leader, Simon Orpen won the toss. The outfield looked lightning fast and the boundary on the coastal side short so it was decided that we'd have a bit of a bat.
The innings was opened by Dan Lane on his Erratics debut and Ian Lisk. Simon obviously hoping that Mr Lisk would be rather better at starting things off than he had been at finishing them during his now infamous final over in THAT game at Denbury!
Lynton's opening bowler was quick but the pitch was slow and the bounce rather low. Dan and Ian settled on the age old policy of waiting for the bad ball to come along. Fortunately a lot of bad balls were to come along. In no time at all 50 runs were on the board. Dan was by this time driving and pulling the ball regularly to the boundary whilst Ian cut and deflected the ball away at the other end. A regular supply of wides, byes and no-balls helped in keeping things ticking along nicely to such an extent that neither batsman had reached fifty by the time 130 runs were on the board!
Dan by this time had tweaked a hamstring and hindered by this fell for 49, caught and bowled, the opening partnership having put on 143. Jonathan Kirby adorned with a lid, then came to the wicket. 'That's the longest I've ever had to wait to bat!' he said as a he strode to the middle. Unimpressed, Peter Thompson replied, 'That's all very well but you won't be needing that helmet!' Prophetic words as it was to turn out. Jonathan's long wait was not matched by his time at the crease, the victim of a juggling catch at mid-on. Matthew Cook then entered the fray and proceeded to mercilessly punish the bowlers with an aggresive display of timing and power. The ball started to disappear regularly several yards up the valley sides at either end of the ground. Meanwhile Phil Power was counselling Ian Lisk at the other end, 'Don't do anything stupid and you can have a ton here.' Pretty much next ball Ian did something stupid, flayed at a very wide one and was caught for 63.
Tony Wragg and Matt then shared a rapid 50 partnership with Matt at one point hitting 4 successive sixes. His 50 was esitimated to have come off around 25 balls. Tony was then hit on the head by a beamer (should have worn a helmet?) and no doubt dazed was bowled soon after. Matt though continued in a similar vein, ably supported by Brian Carpenter at the other end. The innings closed with Matt making 108 not out, the Erratics totalling 300 for 5 off their allotted 40 overs and Brian being caught out off the final ball....the Eratics do not do perfection! Oh yes.....and there were 57 extras!!
Tea was an unsurprisingly upbeat affair despite Tony having to go briefly off to hospital for a precautionary check on the bloodied bump on his head. The game was not up yet though, Lynton having only the previous week chased down 300 runs in 39 overs to win. Maybe things could still possibly go wrong?
The Erratics took the field with twelfth man Ed Thomas being called in to deputise for poor Tony. Phil Power and John Pearson opened the bowling and proceeded to bowl both accurately and with a good deal of variation. Phil was desperately unlucky to have 2 lbw's turned down before the Pearson clan struck as David took a fine catch at mid-off off his father's bowling. Phil, spurred on previous apparent injustices then took 3 more quick wickets for just 23 runs, including a lightning stumping by the ever young Mr Thompson, such that by the time 16 overs were gone, Lynton were a long way behind the required run rate and in trouble at 50 for 4.
The introduction of Matt Cook and Simon Orpen in to the attack served only to increase the pressure and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as the Erratics fielding lived up to the high standards of the rest of the team's play. A fine diving catch was taken in the deep by Matt prompting Simon to volunteer, 'I love you and want to have your babies!!'
John Pearson then took a tumbling catch close to the long-on boundary which elicited cries of, 'You'd never guess he was 70!' Phil then took a sharp catch at point before in true Erratic fashion 3 chances went down in quick succession including one that Ian managed to drop in front of his wife to the comment, 'That wasn't very good!'.
David Pearson replaced Matt Cook and was desperately unlucky not to take at least one wicket....no names mentioned! 28 overs in to the innings and it was all over as the last wicket fell with only 113 on the board.
The Erratics had won by 187 runs, Peter behind the stumps had not conceded a single bye and Simon had finished with 5 for 26. A fine all round display made all the more enjoyable by the good humoured Lynton team, the incredible surroundings and of course the perfect weather.....as forecast!!
