Chulmleigh v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 06 May 2012 at 2pm
Match was Drawn

Match report by Varun Kothamachu:

After a series of un-summer-like behaviour of Varuna, the god of the sky, water and celestial ocean (according to the Vedic religion) which lead to the cancellation of the first three games of the season, there was some respite for the Erratics with two full days of cricket. After a slightly disappointing draw at Stoke-in-Teignhead, a few members of the team arrived at the ground with rubbery legs from the previous game wondering what wrath the winds of Chulmleigh were bringing with them this year. Highlights from this game last year include a middle order collapse with 5 wickets lost for about thirteen runs. Watching the clever flighty slow right arm bowler, AJ practise in the nets as we drove into the ground seemed ominous. Upon reaching the pavilion, we were informed about a new addition to the field next door. A fiery bull which can chase you down the field and head butt you to the nether world, when the ball clears the boundary and one goes across the fence to fetch it.

At least it wasn’t as windy as last year and it appeared Vayudev was enjoying a siesta in Chulmleigh. Vayudev according to Indian mythology is the god of wind and the father of Hanuman, the ever so popular monkey god.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Chris Ferro walked onto the ground with D.Takle who was playing his first game for the Erratics. This partnership was short lived as Takle was caught by the bowler while the score board stood at eight. Soon, Matt and Jonathan followed Takle back to the pavilion in quick succession. The scene seemed perfectly suited for another one of Paul’s strong batting display like his previous half century performance at Chulmleigh, from the year before. He opened his innings with a fine boundary and seemed to be in very good nick, before an unlucky top edge from his bat sent the ball crashing into his jaw, leaving him bloodied and having to retire hurt for the rest of the innings.

All this while, the scoreboard continued to tick with Chris Ferro’s quick running between the wickets and the occasional shot through the gaps, sending the ball racing to the boundary. He was soon joined by Nigel Rutherford as Jamie departed without troubling the scorers. This was the setting for a fine partnership between Chris and Nigel as they kept the score board ticking, slowly and steadily helped build a strong Erratics score at Chulmleigh. Very soon, the shots started coming more easily and the spectators were privy to some wonderful boundaries and sixes from Nigel while Chris continued his strong and fluid batsmanship (the computer says this isn’t a word, but I believe it should be added) on the other end.

A flick on to the leg side brought Chris Ferro to his first hundred for the Erratics this season and he was soon followed by Nigel, who scored a fine boundary filled entertaining 53. As we stopped for tea, the score board stood at a strong score of 203 which by all standards was a tough score to beat for any opposition.

The tea room at Chulmleigh to my memories has always been the only place of respite from the strong winds on this ground. A wonderful spread (for all the meat lovers) and some interesting options for others along with some tea was a welcome break for everyone. Buoyed by a strong score, team Erratics was in high spirits to stem the opposition’s performance and avenge the loss from the previous year.

Debutant Lucky Bandhu from Bhilai in India opened the innings with a wonderful maiden over bowled in a un-Erratic-like manner. He was supported on the other end by the other Indian in this more recently seen Indian invasion of the Erratics. A top edge from a devious, planned (Erratics devised) bad ball from Kothamachu was caught by Jeff Haynes to bring a quick end to Yarnley’s innings. He was soon replaced by the experienced batsman, Sheehan who scored another gem of an innings with a top score of 93 for Chulmleigh, before being dismissed by a very clever slow ball from Matt Cook. Matt finished his spell with three wickets while the debutant, Lucky grabbed his first kill (wicket:-P) for the Erratics. The match ended in a draw with the batsmen from Chulmleigh holding fort till the end of day’s play.

All through the day, the game swung between both the sides reflecting on the fine exhibition of strong performances from players in both teams. This would go down in the book as a strong Erratics performance with good catches, fielding and great batting.

[ANOther should be James Fox, I think, but the website won't let me add him for some reason.]
