Match Report: Simon Orpen

The penultimate outdoor game of 2009 for the Erratics certainly proved one of the more eccentric. Firstly we all arrived for the requested prompt start at midday only to find no opposition and a deserted ground being rained upon in a determined and sustained fashion! Chris Cook attempted to make contact with the locals via a group of tennis players and it was decided that we would head to the pub to await any further updates. As soon as pints were bought we were informed that it was a one o clock start so back down the hill to the ground we all went once more !

By now the rain had really set in and there was much debate as to whether it was mist, drizzle, mizzle, monsoon or any other word to describe precipitation beginning with an M! Chris Ferro as captain decided to walk out with the opposition skipper and before we knew it we were informed that we were batting. Nobody seemed too keen to go first but Chris ‘I like partnerships’ Mellett and Guy Clarke donned their sou’westers and navigated us to a healthy opening stand. Chris made 23 and Guy an excellent 31 including a beautifully timed six before falling lbw. Chris Cook contributed 32 as conditions deteriorated still further. He was helped by Dominic Prosser with 16 and Chris Ferro who made an excellent 32 not out. The Tedburn fielders found the going underfoot heavy and at one point their captain suggested coming off’ to see if the conditions improved in half an hour’ he was ignored by all and our score after the last of our 35 overs was a respectable 170 for 7.

During the tea interval Chris Cook told all and sundry that he forecast sunshine by four o clock. It seemed unlikely but he was adamant. When we actually did go out to field the weather if anything was even worse although the sight of Chris fielding at first slip complete with telescopic umbrella was one to behold!

Dominic Prosser opened the bowling with Phil Ellis. Dominic picked up an early wicket but Phil slipped and added another to his season of injuries after two overs. I took over and bowled the next seven overs from the tennis court end taking the one wicket thanks to a catch by the captain.

Tedburn were pretty much advancing serenely towards their target when things all started to go a bit queer. There was an eccentric run out off a shot we all thought was going for six. There was then more unusual running when Tedburn turned down a second bye to win the game. This prompted Neil Branton who had scored an excellent 71 to commit cricketing suicide by walking away from the wicket as Chris Ferro delivered a ball on middle stump. Nobody but him knows why he did it and it left us all speechless. Tedburn had started to lose wickets and had a minor wobble before passing the Erratics total for the loss of six wickets.

As we left the ground the clouds did indeed part and the sun came out. Too little too late I’m afraid and a rare example of Chris Cook’s timing being awry!

So what was for many of us the last game of the season will have been one of the strangest, yet one we will long remember. For those of us returning to Tedburn a week later who knows what will happen. Cricket in October is certainly unpredictable!
