Clyst St George v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Sun 25 Jun 2006 at 2pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets
Match report
by Simon Orpen
Well it was a game of two halves or even worse it was a case of two
games of two halves -one definitely wasn't cricket and the verdict's
still out on the other one! The Erratics batted first in what was to be a 35 over per side game. Captain Chris Cook decided to take a back seat due to a hand injury and went out to umpire leaving instructions to 'get on with it' and that a total of 250 was the target. That and an England win against Ecuador in the world cup is surely not too much to ask.
Openers Matt Cook and Sid Thomson set about the Clyst bowling and Matt soon reached 50 with a succession of clips and drives only to be cut down in his prime by the umpire (the previously mentioned Erratics captain) Sid carried on his merry way though and looked completely untroubled as he passed 50. Nick Birbeck kept him company for a while as did John Curtis then your reporter had one of his longer stays at the crease for a not exactly chanceless or beautiful 31, but at the end of the day they all count. Sid unfortunately departed for 94 yet again just failing to complete his maiden Erratics century. Andrew McRae chipped in with some valuable runs before being caught for 12 and Adam Thomas had a couple of overs to show that perhaps he should have batted higher with 18 not out plundered in his usual mighty way.
The Clyst bowling was accurate and nagging though never really a threat, Guest being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 47. And so the Erratics finished on 253 achieving exactly what the captain had asked for-if only the wily Swede could achieve the ambitious goal of a victory over England's mighty opponents everything would be set fair for a successful afternoon!
There then followed a two hour break in proceedings so that those
interested could follow the football. David Beckham was literally 'sick as a parrot' after scoring England's goal and England were mightily unimpressive. Linda remained outside (see picture) and declined to take part until the sandwiches arrived (thanks to Andrew and Nick) So England move on to the next round and the Erratics took the field to defend their total and fight the effects of beer and cake.
Peter Hinds and Chris Cook opened the bowling-Peter initially misfiring but then settling down to a tidy spell. Chris as ever bowled well though without luck, something that could be said of all the bowlers, especially Frank Pike and David Pearson both of whom had catches dropped off them. It soon became apparent that we were going to struggle with the Clyst openers especially Doe in fine form. The only events worthy of mention during Clyst's march to victory was Coe retiring hurt 'having done a fetlock' according to Adam and the one wicket taken, a smart catch behind by Nick off Adam playing the Wayne Rooney role (lone striker!) It was a frustrating afternoon for the Erratics and there was an instance of what the team likes to call a 'wobble' when Matt's annoyance with life in general boiled over. In the other game it would have been an automatic red card - in ours it was a ticking off from the Umpire and Nick Birbeck-how much more civilised cricket is!
After the match we joined the Clyst players in the bar and watched the second World cup game of the day-Portugal and Holland which ended in chaos as players were booked and sent off left right and centre. Pub quizzers might want to remember that it produced a record number of bookings for a world cup game (17) and Erratics might want to remember that football and cricket should be kept well apart!
