Match Report: Chris Cook
At the crack of ten thirty (much earlier than necessary) Erratics gathered on the windswept acres of Withycombe archery club to play what will undoubtedly become the next in a sequence of format innovations, a T25/25/25/25. Only Kirby and Cook began singing the song, to their own disgust. Young buck erratics commenced some high jinks catching practice, whilst your correspondent contemplated available metaphors for this match report, and swore to eschew such.
Our skipper, Matt Cook, won the toss & sent us out into the gale force. It made field setting nigh on impossible, Erratics wandering about uncontrollably, pale goats in a blasted wilderness. But no matter, Lympstone batsmen were in any event unable to lay meaningful willow onto the prodigious swing of Rutherford and Ferro, an inability which accounted for both openers within the first two overs. The bracing morning proved curiously inspirational, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Nigel taking 3 in 3 overs, and then Cook C. and Ellis claiming two apiece. Penny, David and Matt also bowled with control and aggression, whilst catches were held all over the field. Lympstone tumbled to 64 all out – a quite astonishing performance by the bemused visitors, feathers in caps all round.
The fear that we may have shot our bolt in that session was soon dispelled by our batswo/men – Chris Ferro opening up with Jan Wheldon, recent asylum-seeker from Humberside complete with knuckle injury. Together they fashioned a solid and well-paced reply, particularly in response to Ingham’s accurate opening salvo, so that when the innings paused midway for lunch, Erratics were almost at the opposition score with no arrows broken. Even the tasty barbeque lunch, served up by the gentlewomen of the local sward, and washed down with flagons of wine and caskets of ale (all generously provided at no charge by our hosts) failed to derail the Erratic sense of purpose. Jan continued to 17, Ferro brought up his 50 before falling stumped as he headed for the strawberries and cream mid-shot. Jonathan and Matt then contributed with some sprightly shot-making, despite occasional aggressive half-trackers from the Lympstone pacemen.
At this juncture the aforementioned ale attacked both the acuity and the willpower of your reporter, who recorded that in their second innings, Lympstone made a better fist of batting, but again Erratic bowlers were anything but erratic (Pearson 3 -24, Price 2–5) and continued to take wickets and catches (including 3 in the slips, one reportedly spectacular, though modesty forbids etc), Jan concluding their innings with a catch taken with the one-handed reluctance. Lympstone’s 117 left us only 52 runs to make, following a no-crust tea of utmost elegance, (especially when taken with more ale). Was it Nigel that opened, and hit a few with young Pearson? I recall we lost one or two wickets & that the skipper, egged on by Penny, placed himself ahead of his hapless recorder in order to score the winning runs. A bull’s-eye of a day.
