Events started badly before the game had even begun, with the realisation that the main road out to Dunsford was closed, necessitating a detour via Tedburn. Additional confusion brought by the rather well hidden signpost in Tedburn, directing lost-cricketers towards Dunsford...

Anyway, we got 11 Erratics to Dunsford in the end; all hopeful of reversing the defeat from earlier in the season. Sadly the Sunsets’ opening pair had other ideas, setting about Gareth and David’s bowling in a free-hitting manner that would define their innings. Gareth was unlucky not to pick wickets up, with edges flying over the top of first slip or just wide of point, and David threatened when he got his length right. A change was required, bringing Alan Peacock and John Nagle into the game.

Alan bowled superbly for the main part, with one of the opening pair struggling to get bat on ball. Sadly for him, when he did he managed to crash a well hit drive straight into Gareth’s hands, thankfully without him having to move (it was one of those catches that either stick and look good, or that go through your hands leaving the fielder cursing his hand/eye co-ordination). Alan’s tight second over pressured the batsmen into embarking on a suicidal single – clearly they didn’t know that Chris Ferro’s arm is not one to take on! At the other end, John really hit his stride in his second over; getting the ball to move away from the batsmen beautifully and he too was unlucky not to leave with greater reward. Penny and Simon bowled well in their spells, and Simon in particular deserved more; having tempted the batsmen into offering several chances that the Erratics field were far too polite to accept. (Editor's note: The Black Ox can be said to have stepped on Simon's foot.)

Indeed, even by the standards we have set in recent years, our fielding was as bad as I’ve seen it this season, making your correspondent consider asking the scorers to note runs conceded via error to an additional extras column, just to make the bowlers feel a bit better about their figures! Chris Ferro came on at the end, and was the pick of the bowlers, snagging himself two wickets and was economical considering the time of the innings he was bowling at. The Sunsets finished their innings on 146-3; meaning we needed over 7 an over to win the game.

Chris Ferro and Jonathan Kirby opened the innings for us and got things off to a great start. Jonathan looked in fine nick, driving with power and flicking impudent cuts away with ease before falling to a good catch. At the other end, Chris did what Chris does best; effortlessly getting to the retirement score of 30 without ever looking in trouble.

The momentum built by Chris and Jonathan was sadly lost with their departures falling within an over or so of each other. Paul Campton, who had looked very good for Teign Valley when playing against us earlier in the season, was joined at the crease by Guy Clarke who has been in superb form this season. Sadly Guy was given LBW to a ball that (in his eyes at least!) kept low, but was finishing a good foot outside leg. Sadly Paul and Chris Fear (who joined him out in the middle following Guy’s dismissal) took several overs to get going, although when he found his rhythm, Paul played some lovely shots that helped bring our total somewhere closer to respectability. Whilst waiting to go in, David Pearson promised us that he’d last a mere 5 balls before returning to the pavilion with 30 runs on the board. Whilst he didn’t quite manage this feat, he did get the scorebook rattling along nicely following Chris’ dismissal and should, on reflection, have been further up the order. We finished 51 short of the Sunsets’ total, which wasn’t quite as short as I thought we’d end up.

Sausages and chips were served in the Royal Oak afterwards, which were greatfully received and thankfully the rest of the weekend’s cricket picked up...!
