CF Mini-league (vs Newton St. Cyres) v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 22 Jun 2017 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 94 Runs

Match report Well…. the chances of Erratics reaching the Final in this year’s Cheriton Fitzpaine mini-league seem to be reducing rapidly. In fact, with the record so far being Won 1 and Lost 3, with only one match left to be played, against the Met Office on 3 August, it must be almost certain that we won’t achieve the Final status that we gained last year.

Nevertheless, as always, this competition is very enjoyable in which to participate and the game against Newton St. Cyres was no exception. A seemingly not impossible imbalance between the sides from the outset did not bring on any undue pessimism. Admittedly, we only had 8 players, but at some points, they only had 9. Some of us thought there were still only 9 at the finish of the match, but the batting score sheet for Newton St. Cyres shows 10 with scores!

The number of players at the ground was slow to evolve. All eight Erratics were present and correct by the appointed start time of 6pm, but for the next 20 minutes or so, it looked as though we were facing an opposition of four. Perhaps the missing Newton St. Cyres players were suffering the well-known elusiveness of the Cheriton Fitzpaine ground’s whereabouts. There were two lively Jack Russells enjoying a rough-and-tumble with each other throughout the match, after it eventually started. Perhaps they could have been useful fielders if no-one else turned up?

It was decided by captain Gareth Oughton to let the opposition bat first, so that there was time for their remaining players to arrive. And so, whilst Erratics were fielding, we were unaware of the gradually increasing arrivals in the pavilion. But as wickets and retirements came and went, there seemed eventually to be a ready supply of Newton players emerging onto the pitch.

And what damage did those players do! One opener with 20, number 10 scoring 28 and three batsmen in between retiring after reaching the statutory 30 runs. One was retired out for 38 – how did that happen?!!

With the league rules permitting a maximum of three overs per bowler, some non-regular bowlers had to be deployed. Matt Crawford, Mark Phillips and debut player Sivaranam Subramanian did their best against some strong batting, but it was expensive. Our regulars, Fraser Chave, Duncan Chave, Gareth Oughton and Krupakar Nallala held it all together as economically as possible, with Fraser, as per his now familiar good form, getting figures of 1 for 7 in 3 overs. Wickets were very hard to come by, especially with only six fielders apart from the bowler and wicket-keeper (Jonathan Kirby had to run from his wicket-keeper’s stance to the boundary several times to fetch balls from fine leg) and the final score was a massive 169.

Special mention for fielding goes to Matt and Fraser who seemed to be covering enormous arcs to intercept the ball as it sped towards the boundary through the large gaps everywhere.

Erratics reply in batting got off to a flying start with a great opening Chave partnership, both eventually being bowled. We had some hopes still, though, until both Krupakar and Jonathan were caught before their innings had hardly started, Krupakar unluckily off a powerful aerial square cut which was spectacularly caught close to the boundary by a swiftly moving fielder and Jonathan top-edging to give a chance in the gully area. After those dismissals, it has to be said that optimism, wishful thinking and rose-tinted spectacles were needed to believe that Erratics could get the remaining 100 or so runs needed with only three more wickets to fall and no retirees to come back in and continue their innings. Mark and Siva managed to stay at the crease for a few overs and put a few more runs on the board but before too long it was all over. We just reached the magic total of 75, which apparently gives us one point in the league table!
