Match report
Your correspondent writes to you from France with regrets for the delay in reporting on this match as a result of extended travel and personal commitments. However, from what I can recall at the elapsed time of nine days, the recent evening cricket match between Cavendish Cavaliers and Erratics bore little similarities with any episode known about the English Civil War. In fact, my delay in writing is partly due to my attempt to become aware of any suitable pun to link the two, but, alas (a common term, I believe, in the seventeenth century), no such inspiration has befallen me. The only thing that I can think of is that the match was played at Barton, which is a place name which, it seems to me, would have been a credible name for a historic battlefield had it been called into need.
Having dealt with the historical aspects (or lack of) of my topic, we now move onto the sartorial ones. Your correspondent, having, so he believed, made elaborate preparations for his first game of the season, realised en route to the game that he had, in fact, omitted to include white socks in his kit bag and was actually wearing brightly coloured stripey socks. Troubled by the potential embarrassment, he had spied a well-known supermarket a few minutes before arriving at the Barton ground. Having made sure he knew where the ground was, he was challenged by another Erratic as to why he was leaving the ground again so soon after arriving there. “I’m just going to Asda to try to find some white socks” was the reply. Well, sure enough, such an item was rapidly acquired and the errant Erratic was soon back at the ground and changed ready in time for the match. But it was not just one pair of socks successfully purchased, but the minimum possible, being a pack of 5 for £2.50, enough for half a team.
And now, (at last, I hear you say), on to the contest itself. Erratics batted first, welcoming two new players, Ben Pullan and Martin Howe, on loan respectively from Clyst St. George and Sunsets to assist our hard pressed selector, Jonathan, with the extreme shortage of regular Erratics. We started with a great opening partnership from Ben and Martin Wright, each of them achieving the retirement score of 25 with a spectacular 6, Ben’s back over the bowler and Martin’s a towering hit to wide midwicket, whose trajectory towards the exact position of the watching Erratics needed careful tracking to avoid collateral damage. These two players were followed by Duncan Chave and Martin Howe, with Duncan also retiring and Martin almost getting to that score. The spectators were willing Duncan to finish with a 6, as the precedent had been set, but this was not to be despite his otherwise usual stylish innings with other boundaries in the bag. Sivaraman followed with a quick-fire innings and then Mark Phillips and Matt Crawford added a few more runs, with Erratics finishing on 132 for 2 after the 20 overs.
In reply, the Cavendish Cavaliers got off to a confident start with their openers putting on a good total, with one of them achieving the retirement score of 25. After a couple of wickets, one of their umpires was overheard to comment “That’s the beginning of our tail.” However, there was by no means a collapse. Erratics bowlers had to press on throughout the full 20 overs, before the innings finished on 83 for 9. The best of the bowling came from Phil Power with 3 wickets for 8 runs off 4 overs, including a stunning caught and bowled. In contrast, your correspondent missed a much easier caught and bowled, running down to the middle of the pitch with arms waving vaguely in some uncertainty as to the ball’s exact path after it had left the bat in a gentle spoon. (There was some compensation in the taking of a wicket in his second over, thanks to a superb running take by Siva at square leg.) Amongst good bowling all round, Ben and Siva should be mentioned for their economical and effective performances.
An excellent match, for only our second of the season, with friendly and hospitable opponents who put on a welcome barbecue to complete the evening.
