Frocester v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 31 Aug 2018 at 2.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 55 Runs

Match report Frocester Cricket Club play in a wonderful setting below the Cotswold hills. A six hit across the road takes you to the impressive Frocester Court with its 14th century Tithe Barn. Behind the pavilion lie the remains of a Roman villa. In the opposite direction is the George, an eighteenth century Coaching Inn. It was here that several Erratics met for pre match refreshments while others made a nostalgic trip to the Anchor at Epney, scene of years of Gloucester tour camping and revelries.

There is a frisson of excitement amongst the tourists as they arrive at the new pavilion, only opened in 2017. Here you have the chance of experiencing an upstairs changing room and a balcony to watch the game from. What a contrast to Teign Valley on Monday!

There is also the sober realisation that Frocester are a very decent standard cricket club and that we are bound to be tested. The Club reached the National Village Final at Lords in 1993 and at the time of our match played in the West of England Premier League. They turn out five teams on a Saturday and have numerous Colts teams and a developing Women’s and Girl’s section.

The team we faced were mainly drawn from their Second and Third teams and a guest from Painswick. As it happened the following day saw Frocester first team relegated. This will have frustrated the second eleven players as they had won the third tier Gloucestershire League but cannot now be promoted as they aren’t allowed to play in the same league as their first team.

Frocester won the toss and batted in a 40 overs game. The Erratic fielders noted the remnants of the recent Frocester Beer Festival around the ground. The Festival has been going for 34 years and is now run by the Cricket Club – a nice little earner no doubt.

Chris Ferro and Mark Hailwood opened the bowling and both struck early as Frocester stuttered to 12-2. Sadly this flattered to deceive and the next time a wicket was taken the electronic scoreboard had reached 136. The batting of Ewen Gegg was particularly striking – his 95 including both left and right handed batting! Morris hit 59, Tuck 40 and young Taylor Ireland a very accomplished 39 not out. After 40 overs a challenging 254-6 had been accumulated.

Fraser Chave and Hailwood both took two wickets as the six Erratic bowlers toiled in the afternoon sun. They weren’t particularly helped by the fielding. In reality there was quite an average age difference between the two sides and this led to the observation that several Erratics ‘accompanied’ the ball to the boundary rather than trying stopping it.

After an excellent tea spent watching Moeen Ali torturing the Indians at the Rose Bowl (sorry Krupakar!) we set about the task of scoring 255. It proved a little beyond us. Indeed only two Erratics managed double figures. Duncan Chave led from the front and hit a Captain’s 50 and Chris Cook rolled back the years with a superb 101 not out. Someone mentioned that it was Chris’s 50th century for the Club. Respect!

Thanks to Duncan and Chris we reached 199-9, a decent enough riposte but no cigar. Jim Thompson scored 5 not out and was telling anyone that would listen that he thought it was his highest score for 5 years.

As the sun set a hot air balloon drifted above the ground to accompany the hot air emanating from the Erratics as the fines were doled out by James Colclough.
