Ide v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Wed 15 Jul 2020 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 6 Runs
Match report
Although it was the second game of the season, the match at Ide was still a match of firsts.
-First loss of the season, surely the Erratics have never recorded their first loss as late as Mid July (Resident statto please confirm…)
-First 20 overs game.
-And Martin Wright’s first run out of the season…
Returning with some chronology; Wednesday evening was bright and sunny, the cricketing gods allowing us to make up for lost time. The ground at Ide always seems to be larger in person than it does in the memory- this year the wicket seemed slightly further away from the stream, the feature of many a wet ball over the years. The strip was also on a slight angle, as an added challenge for the batsmen.
Ide were well prepared in this new Covid era (name for the next Erratics book perhaps?). They ensured we were well sprayed upon entry, and had marked out white boxes for us in the grass by the clubhouse.
Captain Mark won the toss, and elected to field, based upon our apparent readiness. A pause before the Ide batsmen reached the middle allowed us to suck in the glorious evening it had become, calm and warm.
Mark and Fraser got us going, but so too the Ide batsmen got themselves going- helping themselves to a good start with 3 sixes in the first few overs. F Chave made the breakthrough just before the batsman could retire, a heave to midwicket was caught via a painful deflection.
With the retirement of batsman number 2, and the home team sitting pretty with 68 after 11 overs, Krups and Rutherford and later Crawford helped stem the tide against the less aggressive batsmen. Nigel’s bowling was as quick and testing as ever, showing no rustiness despite the 10+ month layoff. A clattering of the stumps, a mix up between the wickets and a catch off Krups, the home side finished on a round 100.
By this time the ground had swelled, 17 spectators were counted following the large attendance at the previous game at Tipton. The lack of cricket to watch being the likely inspiration, rather than hearing the Erratics are coming to town.
The required run rate was 5 an over, but a watchful start saw only 3 from the first 3 overs. Wright and D Chave didn’t let the bowlers in, and instead gave the fielders a chance and couldn’t complete a quick single. Krups came in and a partnership built, plenty of singles accumulated and a huge six over the manure pile, as well as his 400th 4. Both Wright and Krups made vital contributions, both falling with a single strike of retirement.
At 60-4 after 16 overs, the equation looked tough. Fraser and Rutherford were at the crease though, and the thoughts of those at the boundary went to the win percentage. Captain Hailwood was so confident of a 1% possibility that he offered to strip and run the length of the stream if we claimed a win. Seemingly inspired, Rutherford sandwiched a 4 with two 6’s over the stream in the penultimate over.
The angled wicket continued to prove a problem, with Rutherford following Krups, Weiler, Thomas by being bowled out.
A tense finish was on, 15 needed off the last over, maybe our % chance had reached double figures. F Chave hit a six, leaving a final six required to tie the game.
Almost perfect symmetry to the game last year, where Ide needed six off the last delivery to win. Fraser was unable to connect, Hailwood relieved with not having to eat his words, and the game came to a close.
Many thanks to our friendly hosts who put on a good show, sanitiser aplenty and a good helping of sunshine.
