Newton Poppleford v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Thu 29 Jul 2021 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Won By 4 runs
Match report
The Erratics now have influence in these parts with Brian Carpenter (player 1996-2011) a local resident and vice-chair of the Parish Council. However, managing the weather is probably beyond even his powers. So it was with some trepidation that the teams gathered as the clock ticked towards the 6pm start time. The heavens had opened and the covers were on the pitch. It did not look good. But miracles happen and almost as quickly as the rain had arrived, it disappeared and it was game on. Prelude to a cricketing miracle....
As we eyed up the opposition we were a bit concerned by an Oxford University jacket being worn by a member of the Newton Poppleford team. Thankfully it was for ice hockey not cricket.
Talking of Oxford University how wonderful to see our very own Sophie Florides (debut 2013) playing in the Varsity Match v Cambridge this year. News is that Sophie will captain Oxford next year when the game is due at Lords.
Anyway back to the action and what a good start by the Erratics. Richard Lindsay and Matt Crawford immediately played with real intent , striking the ball hard and running briskly. Matt was particularly dominant and quickly moved to 25 and retirement.
Krupakar Nallala kept up the momentum despite a knee injury and added a well crafted 20 with Ben Yarde- Buller matching all this early endeavour with a very easy on the eye retired 25.
At the end of the 12th over the Erratics were a very promising 92-2. I made the fatal mistake of observing to Chris Ferro how we were looking like a really good T20 team tonight. Chris, with a pained look from too much experience, reminded me that this was the Erratics and there was a long way to go.
Chris was right! 92-2 managed to become 112-8 by the end of the innings. The less said about the latter part of our effort the better. Although a mention in dispatches ought to go to Valentin Haemmerli, who in only his second game, managed to defend his wicket for much longer than those around him. We only had 10 players and the clatter of wickets was such that Matt and Ben had to come out of retirement – both ending with 26 not out. Two very decent contributions.
The Newton Poppleford innings very closely followed the pattern of ours. A storming start and then the stutter. As black clouds hovered in very gloomy conditions, the home top order hit long and hard and were 78-2 at the end of the 13th over. Krups (who only conceded 9 runs from his four overs) and Mike O’Sullivan took the wickets.
Then the Erratics stranglehold started. This was in no small part due to Man of the Match Matt who bowled a superb spell of 4-0-9-2 to help dry the runs up.
But with 4 overs to go and only 24 runs needed to win, Captain Jonathan Kirby had a problem. He had run out of regular bowlers! Yes Chris Ferro was on the field but he had a nagging side strain. Desperate times called for desperate measures. The ball was thrown to me and then JK led from the front at the other end.
Newton Poppleford had probably never encountered such flight from both ends and amazingly could only garner 19 from the remaining overs. The Erratics had won an unlikely victory by 4 runs. A master class in death bowling!
Within minutes of the end the long promised rain was pouring down. So well done the weather and well done JK and his brave Erratics! And thank you too to Newton Poppleford for being, as always, such friendly hosts.
