Ide v Erratics Cricket Club Erratics on Fri 10 Jun 2022 at 6.00pm
Erratics Cricket Club Lost by 9 Wickets

Match report Sunshine, nachos and cold beer were the highlights of our difficult Friday evening game at Ide, which at least was a nice change from the rain-interrupted game earlier in the week at Feniton. The Erratics, under the guidance of Captain Kirby, batted first on a new and improved Ide wicket following the acquisition of a new heavy roller. I, personally at least, have been learning lots about wicket prep since we’ve been out and getting the ground ready at Lower Ashton for our opening home fixture at the end of June. So it might be a good idea to note the effect of an upgraded roller, considering the existing rollers in the Teign Valley, which Matt Crawford correctly described as somewhat “Medieval”.
Anuj Tiwari and myself (Richard Lindsay) opened the batting and formed a partnership of over 50, before I retired not out. The first change in Ide’s bowling attack, however, brought a flurry of wickets and dried up the Erratics’ run scoring. This involved some aggressive shorter pitched bowling from Ash who took 3-4 from his three overs, including dismissing Tiwari for 25 who edged an attempted back foot shot, which was caught at gulley after a deflection off Anuj’s shoulder. This reduced Erratics to 67-4 in the 13th over, and they struggled to regain the early momentum and finished their twenty overs on 91-6, which appeared to be a tricky task to defend given the short boundaries at Ide’s ground.
And so it proved to be the case, despite Hailwood dismissing the Ide opener cheaply, trapping him LBW for 5. Otherwise, it was a story of missed chances in the field for Erratics, despite the bowlers’ best efforts to make the most of the blinding, setting sun. This included a few missed catches and some clumsy work behind the stumps by yours truly, which prevented an easy run out chance after some characteristically efficient ball retrieval and throw from Matt Crawford. It’s often commented that I am one of the tallest keepers around, and although it can be helpful for reaching those wider deliveries, my long limbs were my downfall on this occasion as I lost my bearings and my pad dismantled the wicket before the ball was in hand. Oops! Ide comfortably reached the total in the 14th over. Ide compensated for our heavy defeat by kindly provided a spread of beer and nachos (with a very welcomed veggie option for the growing contingent of non-meat-eating Erratics), which was gladly consumed to commiserate our defeat. Not a match to linger long in the memory….
