Match report “Tie valley”, Fraser termed our new home ground after a scintillating and nail-biting finish to the second tied game of the season. A fine Wednesday evening with overcast weather welcomed the Erratics and South Brent players to the picturesque ground. If the previous fixtures at “Tie” valley were any indication, one could have easily imagined a high-scoring game with boundaries all over the place, but the strip for the day had very different ideas. The Erratics were fielding first, and skipper Jonathan asked Nigel and BYB to open the bowling. Nigel looked excellent from the start and sent Dardis packing in his second over. Ben bowled sharp and controlled lengths, unlucky to not get a wicket in his first over. Your correspondent was asked to be the first change and was frustrated by the edges that flew all the way to the boundary. He did get a wicket courtesy a well watched effort by Phil Power who never looked like he would drop it. A Pittaway was looking dangerous when skipper Jonathan put one hand up and plucked the ball flying to the boundary to complete an excellent catch at deep mid-off. Lee and Matt chipped in with wickets as the skipper used 8 bowlers in total. At the start of the innings, 150 looked well on the cards but the skipper moved his troops around and rallied back with solid bowling changes and excellent field placement to restrict Brent to under 80 runs for 9 wickets lost with just under 3 overs to go. Brent’s number 11 however, came in scored a quickfire 23 to take their tally to a 110.

We were treated to an amusing strategy by our skipper who chose to not have a fixed batting order but to send in the players to always keep a left hand-right hand combination on the pitch. Richard and Lee opened the batting. The pitch was acting up as the uneven bounce troubled the batsmen and the wicketkeeper alike. Richard was caught by carter after taking a ball high on the bat. Phil Power looked in great touch but fell to a half tracker that did not rise above knee level. Your correspondent met a similar fate, and all was left in the hands of the last pair. Your correspondent, however, was confident that if Fraser and BYB managed to bat until the 20th over, we certainly wouldn’t lose the game. With 2 runs needed of the last ball, Ben found a gap as the pair ran a single but got run out looking for a second.

Everyone shook hands as teams made their way to the pub to discuss the intense drama that had unfolded just minutes ago.
